Is college really necessary or is it just a false image of society?
Being a college student for the past almost six months, I can honestly say that I feel college is a large waste of time and money. Well, I can't really say that because there are those people who need the education for their future jobs such as doctors, lawyers, all the occupations that first come to mind when you think about college. However, I personally think that it is a huge waste of my precious time and precious money. I go to the University of California, Irvine (UCI) and to tell you the truth, it has been the most pointless thing I have ever done in my schooling career. First, I have not learned a damn new thing. It has depleted my bank account to the point where I am 918 dollars in debt, and I’m only 19. It has sent me into a whirlwind of confusion and “whatthefuckness.” I started off the summer before college not wanting to go to college but did anyway because everyone said I should. Should have listened to my instincts. Society said I should though. Whoopee. “If you don’t go to college and get an education, then you can’t live a good life. You can’t make money, then you won’t be successful.” Bullshit. There are plenty of ways in which a person can make money. Plus, what is the definition of successful? Is it what society says it is, that you have to have a lot of money, a nice car, and a big house? No. It’s whatever you think successful is right? What if you think that successful is having a steady job working as, say, a waiter (I only use that because I work in a restaurant myself), you make good money, you have a decent house, and you have some money in the bank while over time, you are saving for retirement? That could be considered successful to some people. Society might shun this idea of success but so what? Who really cares? It’s what you think is successful that really matters. All that society is doing by telling people what successful is, is putting a false interpretation in their minds which of course leads back to the idea of HAVING to go to college. In my case: I want to be a musician. Preferably in a band with other members of course playing music that we like. (punk and whatnot). First of all, where, in any college, do you see a class about punk music? I have yet to find one. Second, what about a music industry program? Nope, not at a large, four year university (least not yet). I’ve only seen them at community and junior colleges but nobody really considers them as a REAL college, right? Oops, there goes society again labeling what is right and what is wrong. Complete bullshit. In addition, this idea puts way too much stress on those who aren’t made for college. They get this idea that they have to succeed so they force themselves to go to college so they won’t “fail” in society’s eyes. Just the other month, at the University of California, San Diego, a student killed herself during finals week because she just couldn’t take the pressure anymore. What the hell is that? Young adults are now killing themselves because they are under too much stress? Because, once again, society is forcing them to think a certain way? I think it’s insane. What I am trying to get across is that this idea that everyone has to go to college is a complete waste of mental thought and energy of the people who think that successful = lots of money (probably those who are on society’s short leash). It’s not true and it never will be. I’m not saying don’t go to college and live your life bumming whatever you can. I’m just saying rethink what has already been put into your head. Rethink who you are and what you think about yourself. Then decide whether or not you need to go to college or not. After that, you have to look around and plan how you think you can succeed. Use your talents, your already present skills These are what’s going to help you make it in life. Your gifts are what are going to help you make money and feel happy about yourself. Take some time to think about who you are. Then make a plan of action accordingly.
