National Conference Establishes Student Anti-War Coalition

CHICAGO- About 350 students representing over 100 college and high school campuses gathered here for a national student conference on February 21-22.

The conference, which took place at Loyola University, established the Campus Anti-War Network; a national student anti-war coalition representing thousands of students in campus based anti-war committees across the country.

The conference adopted points of unity opposing a US/UN war on Iraq, opposition to the UN sanctions on Iraq, defense of civil liberties and opposition to racist attacks. Proposals to support the March 5th call for national student strike, a call for an April 5th day of action, and in the event that the war starts, a call for student strikes and other actions the day bombing begins. Students are a major layer in the new anti-war movement. The establishment of a national student anti-war organization is a major step forward for the movement as a whole.
