Youth Speech Competition

 

 

 

 

OFFICIAL JUDGES’ INFORMATION AND WORKSHEET

 

On behalf of the Lions of Massachusetts, THANK YOU!! for  volunteering to be a judge. This competition would not be possible without your contribution of time, talent, and effort,

 

The competition is open to all students, including foreign exchange and home schooled students, in grades 10, 11, and 12 provided they are sponsored by a Massachusetts Lions, Lioness, or Leo Club.

 

The purpose of the competition is to provide an opportunity for students to speak publicly on a designated topic of general interest. The competition starts at the local club or school level and proceeds through several levels of competition ending several months later with a statewide competition. In between there are zone, region, and district levels of competitions where the winner of each level has the opportunity to proceed to the next level. The competition culminates with five statewide district winners vying for the title of BEST IN THE STATE.

 

Your job will not be easy but will be rewarding. The contestants are talented high school students who have given freely of their time and effort to enter this competition. They deserve your best effort; they will give you theirs.

 

A panel of three judges shall decide the outcome of the competition. The following criteria applies in the selection of judges:

 

·   Lions, Lioness, or Leos are not permitted to be judges.

 

·   A member of a competing school faculty may not be a judge.

 

·   Judges may not be related or acquainted with any contestant.

 

·   A person may judge only one competition in a year.

 

The responsibility of the judges shall be

 

·   To determine the place of each speaker independent of the other judges using the scoring method outlined in the official Judge’s Worksheet.

 

If at the start of the competition, you become aware of being acquainted with any contestant, please inform the person-in-charge immediately.

 

Judges must score all contestants. EACH JUDGE MUST SELECT ONE PERSON TO BE THE WINNER. TIES ARE NOT ALLOWED FOR ANY PLACE. Judges shall tally their scores using the official Judges Worksheet. JUDGES ARE TO BE GIVEN ALL THE TIME NEEDED TO COMPLETE THEIR SCORING. Each criteria listed on the worksheet must be scored. 

 

JUDGES SHALL NOT CONFER WITH ONE ANOTHER until after the tally sheets have been delivered to the tellers.

 

Tellers will determine the final placement of each speaker by compiling the places and scores of the three judges.

 

Judges worksheets are considered confidential. The person-in-charge may give speakers their individual scores being certain not to release the scores of any other contestant.

 

The use of microphone and speaker’s stand is optional. Contestants may use notes. It is not necessary that contestants address anyone or give the topic title.
