Mount Kilimanjaro 2004
Kilimanjaro at 5895m is the highest peak in Africa. It is also the highest peak in the world for non technical climbs. What this mean is that you can literally "walk" up the mountain. Having said that, one would expect that this is an easy mountain to climb.

The reality is, yes the trek is easy. But the altitude can be your downfall. Physical fitness is a must as you are faced with an endless uphill trek for 7-8 hours everyday for at least 5 days. In addition, the cold is almost unbearable espcially on the night of the climb to the peak! The drinking tube of my hydra pack (the one that I used to store water) was virtually frozen and I could not suck out any water from the pack! We were told later that the temperature at that point was about -20 deg Celsius.

And of course, no shower for the duration of the climb as the temperature is too cold and fear of altitude sickness occuring.

Hmmm ... does not paint a pretty picture right? So why did I want to climb the mountain and why do I still want to return? Despite the effort taken, the altitude sickness, the discomfort, etc - this is one experience I would not miss for the world. For it is when you are faced with such diversity; that you know your strength to move onwards and your judgement to make a rational call.

Kilimanjaro, I will return to conquer thee! Mark my words ...
Porters dividing food Shira
Porters dividing our treasures (i.e. food and backpacks) to be carried along the climb. We felt so luxurious as there were 4 porters assigned to every one trekker! :) Shira Campsite - we climbed along forest vegetation for the first two days and finally reached this spectacular campsite. It is barren with a huge flat space but has spectacular views of the mountain and the valley.
LOTR like trail
At the backpacker
The tired climbers. This trail was exceptionally difficult as the day was gloomy, the trail was barren, the incline was steep, and the mist keep coming in. It reminded us of a scene from Lord of the Rings.
Back to civilisation and all cleaned up! We discovered heaven with showers and found a new found appreciation for being clean!! :)
