Creating Awareness about Application of
Geo-informatics for Rural Development and Poverty Alleviation – a
programme under YSA-2004.
With the
objective of creating awareness about the application of Geo- Informatics
(Remote Sensing, GIS, GPS) for solving local livelihood Problems amongst
school children and youth in rural areas, it has been planned to take up
the activities in rural schools of Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Mansa
in Punjab. Under this, activities containing hands on tools, software and
literature in the regional language will be prepared as resource material.
Geo-informatics being a special branch of information technology, which
deals with capture and management of spatial data in computer environment
using technologies like remote sensing, Geo-informatics information
system, global positioning system and internet, would be used. Initially,
40 teachers, one per school, shall be trained for two days in an
Orientation Workshop in the month of October 2004. Later, these teachers
would impart training to the students of class 7, 8 and 9 of their
respective schools in order to give them hands on experience for using
geographical positioning system and altimeter. This equipment would later
be used in the school itself. Through this programme, awareness would be
generated about the application of Geo-Informatics for rural development,
which would be a precursor to the vision of capacity building and enabling
of local people. It is felt that YSA sets a perfect stage for this
purpose. |
