Listeners will know Paul Desmond as the Dave Brubeck Quartet's sax player or know him for his dates with the MJQ and Chet Baker; but the best way to discover all his playing skills is through his quartet recordings with the silk guitar of the master Jim Hall. This pair of great "cool" musicians blend together very well, achieving a really dry tone that is well backed by the rhythm of the great Connie Kay (notable on his samba brush work on "Samba de Orfeu" and the other bossa tracks). Very interesting is the title track: another 5/4, direct sequel of the famous Take Five, with a rhythmic pattern similar to the pianistic Brubeck's one. An indispensable album for both giutar and sax players.
Il pubblico conoscerà sicuramente Paul Desmond come il sassofonista del Dave Brubeck Quartet o per le sue incisioni con il MJQ o con Chet Baker, eppure il modo migliore per scoprire tutto il suo talento di interprete è tramite le registrazioni del suo quartetto insieme alla vellutata chitarra del maestro Jim Hall. Questa coppia di grandi del "cool" jazz si sa amalgamare molto bene, raggiungendo un suono molto asciutto ben accompagnato dalle ritmiche del grande Connie Kay (notevole per la sua samba con le spazzole su "Samba de Orfeu" e sulle altre bosse). Molto interessante è la title track: un'altro 5/4, erede diretto della famosa Take Five, con un accompagnamento simile a quello pianistico di Brubeck. Un album indispensabile sia per i chitarrista che per i sassofonisti.
