In the course of life, people find many difficulties. Every work does not go as one thinks, and some people find themselves even desperate to live, and few of them may give up their lives. Is it possible to find the lesson of this proverb from Great Expectation written by Charles Dickens?
In order to show this famous novel, which can teach the lesson that every cloud has a silver lining; one must define as what success is shown in the novel. The main character of this novel, Pip, is a younger brother of a bitter woman whose husband is a poor black smith. Pip could live his life as a poor black smith following the husband of his bitter older sister, but unforeseen advent of a prison breaker changed his look as a successful gentleman. Pip relished his life as a gentleman until he found himself that what he had inherited is not real success to him.
The real success to him is found from a husband, a poor black smith, of his older sister. Although his inherited wealth that had been the source of his pride is now gone, he finds that not exaggerated, and real respect for other people and true love for other people is the element that makes a gentleman; Additionally, the author actually tried to criticize corrupt upper society of British people. Finally he found that this discovery had to be great expectation to him and is a silver lining of a dark cloud to him.
The adage, ¡®Every cloud has a silver lining¡¯, is for people who are in a desperate situation in order to encourage them to get out of that situation. A person in the desperate situation in the novel was not Pip who is in his childhood that had suffered from poverty but Pip who lost him and human nature when he thought he became a gentleman. In the end, Pip¡¯s real success which is found later shows Great expectation by Charles Dickens is the novel that can teach not only will to overcome one¡¯s depression and difficulties but also what a silver lining of cloud is.
