Case File#8: Game Over

            “Go!”

I drew my small pistol as Sergeant Hakuei kicked the door down.  My best friend, Kohta, and I had received the warrant for the arrest of Camui Gackt, Toshiya’s husband.  The letters were just a clue, but CSI had also been checking the hanging sites, as well as the hanging victims.  Tiny hair fragments were discovered, and soon they were revealed to have belonged to Gackt.

            “Clear!”

Lieutenant Jiro motioned towards the kitchen of the small apartment, and Kohta slid into the bedroom.  Sergeant Hakuei pointed at an open window within the living room.

“Detective!” he said, turning to me.

I nodded and led a few officers towards the window.  I looked outside, catching the glare of the bright sunlight.  I looked up.

            “Game over!”

A gunshot echoed through the city, as a sharp pain entered my arm.  I fell downward, towards the emergency stairs outside the apartment.  I could feel the blood gush out of my wounded shoulder and trickle slowly down my arm.  I shut my eyes, as my dark sunglasses slid off my face.

“Uhn!” I winced in pain.  So this is what being shot feels like.

“Officer down!” Hakuei cried, and he leaped through the open window and began to climb up after Gackt.

Lieutenant Jiro ordered the other officers to follow the suspect.

“We need a medic!” Kohta cried.

Suddenly, a second gunshot was fired.  I turned to my right, and although my vision turned slightly blurred, I could tell that Kohta had gone down.  I looked left.

            A sniper?  Gackt’s not alone.

I got up and dove through the window into the apartment.  I clutched my wounded shoulder and checked on Kohta.

“Don’t die on me,” I mumbled.  “Lieutenant!  There has to be stairs to the roof.”

“Already there,” Jiro replied.  “Stay put and wait for the medics.”

He bolted out of the apartment room with a few officers.

Wait for the medics.  My ass!

I got up and followed the Lieutenant up the flight of stairs.  My vision blurred even worse, and I almost lost consciousness.  I shoved the door that led to the roof and noticed everyone pointing their guns at Gackt.

“Game over,” Gackt said, shrugging his shoulders.  He had a noose around his neck, already tied tightly.  It was tied down to something, but I couldn’t see.

“Hold your fire!” Jiro cried, as Gackt slid closer to the edge of the roof.

In an instant, Gackt drew another gun and unloaded a full clip.  Officers fell left and right as I watched in amazement.  I fell to my knees, and in the corner of my eye I saw Sergeant Hakuei pull the trigger of his gun.  I turned to my right and saw Gackt’s feet fly upward, as he fell off the ledge.  I watched as the rope quickly unraveled itself and stop with a hard tug.  I shut my eyes.

            Game over.

+++++

            “Hh.”

The hospital room was crowded, full of police officers with doughnuts and coffee.  I opened my eyes and saw Lieutenant Jiro and Sergeant Hakuei.  I smiled.

            “Kohta?”

“He’s fine,” it was the commissioner.  “Wounded shoulder.  I got that a lot when I was a sergeant.”

“Commissioner, sir,” I mumbled.  “Please tell me Hakuei is getting a promotion.”

Commissioner Yoshiki smiled, “Let’s go, boys,”

I relaxed my head into my pillow as my friends left the room.

            Case closed.
