Assignment 2
There are numerous characteristics that are essential for the good leader to possess. Among them are charisma, intuition, expertise, ability to manage, good oral and written communication skills, forcefulness, “vision for the future”, and self-confidence. A leader should be a good listener, follow a certain code of morals and ethics, be respectful towards others, remain poised, learn how to adapt and adjust with the changing environment, stay impartial, challenge others to improve themselves, and lead by one’s own example. The most important characteristic, however, is the persuasiveness of the leader – one’s ability to make others trust, believe, and follow.
One can be a charismatic and poised individual, well-educated, with extensive work experience, full of charm and self-confidence, yet without the ability to persuade others to believe and follow one cannot be a leader. Without the complete support and trust of the followers, one cannot be an effective leader. And in order to win that trust, one has to persuade the others that his or her ideas, beliefs, and plans for the future are the best among the available alternatives.
Leadership is a quality that differentiates one individual among the group of others. Not everyone has the ability to influence others and make them follow. Persuasiveness is the key characteristic that differentiates leaders from followers.
