| ´You´re not letting her in´, I remember this bloke at the club saying : ´She looks like Hiawatha´. Dusty ´O´ was a teenage goth in 83 when he attempted to o to his first gay club. `I wore floaty kimonos, loads of bangles and full make-up. I´ got really long hair and I used to stick feathers in it.` Dusty was 16 and still at school doing ´A Level Drama´ At the time The Nightngale was a little club, on Hurst Street, says Dusty, who was living with his parents and two older sisters in a dull suburb of Birmingham called Aldridge, in the West Midlands. Already a regular at Goth-Punky-Alternative clubs, Dusty heard about the ´Gale from gay friends on the Birmingham Post-Punk Scene ,´There was always a cross over. but none of us used to like the gay venues very much` Was he nervous ? Not at all. We used to sit outside and watch the people who went in. So I wasn´t particularly bothered` ´The Gales was members only and it didn´t let women in. `The first time, I went with a woman friend. So we never got in. I went back the following week with my punky renty look friend Vicent. They didn´t like the look of us either and were turned away. Then we went round the corner and got this old guy who we knew was a member, to sign us in` ´Insinde, it was like Anne Hathaway´s cottage with a sunken dance floor. The music was early, plinky plonky, hi energ. ´The club was full of men with big moustaches in check shirts and Timberlands. I thought it was awful. I nevr went back for two years.` DUSTY ´O ´ - BOYZ MAG |
