Among the variety of festivals and events that take place throughout the year, some of the more interesting are: Christmas Epiphany Easter Balkan Folklore Festival  (Ohrid) Traditional folk songs and dances are performed by groups from the Balkan countries. Ohrid Summer Festival (Ohrid) Classical concerts and plays are performed by national  and international artists. The performances are staged in natural and historical locations of Ohrid. New Year's Day Labor Day Ilinden In 1903  uprising against the Ottoman rule for free and independent Macedonia. On the same date in 1944,  the modern Macedonian state was established. Independence Day After a referendum, independence from former Yugoslavia was declared. Uprising Day In 1941 started the National Liberation War.
