MACEDONIA is a land of high mountains and beautiful lakes, rural villages and scattered small towns. Its people are fascinating blend of traditional cultures and lifestyles who welcome foreign visitors with a genuine spirit of personal hospitality. For centuries, Macedonia was a strategic crossroad linking Europe and the Near East. Macedonia is endowed with an abundance of natural and cultural attractions. Two of its lakes, Ohrid and Prespa, surrounded by spectacular mountain ranges, are located near each other in the southwest of the country. Galichitsa (Galicica) National Park rises between the two lakes, and Pelister National Park provides a backdrop for the eastern side of Lake Prespa |

OHRID AND STRUGA are the towns located along the shores of Lake Ohrid, while the town of RESEN is the gateway to Lake Prespa. In the mountains above these three towns are some of the most interesting villages in the world. Stone houses and barns, outdoor ovens for baking bread, orchards and vineyards, fast flowing streams and community watertaps, grandmothers layered in traditional clothing, shepherds and their dogs tending flocks of sheep and goats, donkeys laden with hay traipsing down narrow trails, and the striking architecture and serenity of the village church filled with burning candles, ancient murals and icons of the Orthodox saints. And everywhere - the friendly Macedonian people eager to offer priceless insights into their timeless existence. |

THE MACEDONIAN LAKELAND was the setting of a glorious era of artistic, cultural and religious enlightenment. On the shores of these two lakes, heavenly icons and mosaics were created, splendid frescoes painted, manuscripts written, and the first university of Europe established. Positioned on the old Roman caravan road, known as Via Ignatia, the Macedonian Lakeland provided inspiration for artists and scholars who created magnificent works of art and learning that have become a glorious legacy for the entire world. UNESCO has recognized the special character of this area by designating Lake Ohrid and the town of Ohrid as UNESCO World Heritage Sites for nature and culture. |
