DTBR's Airplane Project
Stabilizer & Elevator Photos
Last Updated: 1/17/01
After picking up the tail kit on 17 Nov 2000, we spent the weekend working on the Stabilizer.  By 19 Nov, we had the skeleton aligned and clecoed together.
After final deburring, the parts were cleaned with lacquer thinner and primed with Tempo Aviation Zinc Chromate Primer.  Mating metal surfaces were coated thoroughly with the remaining surfaces lightly coated.  A final touch-up coat will be applied after deburring the skin holes and prior to skin installation.
Feeling comfortable with the spar and rib process on the stabilizer, we moved to the elevator skeleton to perform the same tasks. We then continued on to skin the elevator since it looked like a better place to hone our skinning technique than on the larger and more complex stabilizer.

Although noted as "Optional" in the instruction manual, the holding fixture for the elevator was absolutely essential during installation of the nose skin.  The drawing for this fixture is available on the ZAC web site.
