intriguing:
Damian Child

I always found Australian music scene very interesting. One thing is for sure, when you are feeling tired of too much experimentation, european rock illiteracy and hypocracy, american rock igrorance, british rock inflatedness, go to Australia for pure feelings and honest rock'n'roll. There must be something about Australians, they probably drink gasoline instead of water, I don't know.

Well, after so many refreshing rock bands from Australia (Go Betweens, Paul Kelly, The Church, Dubrovniks...) we have a new surprise coming from the same direction. I'm talking about Damian Child. She started as a member of all female band Girl Monstar and continued solo. She is a bass player, singer and songwriter.

Her bass playing is excellent. She finds a lot of nice solutions in her bass playing. It is descrete, but more careful listener will be able to feel the beauty of her style clearly. She is also a great singer. One of the names her singing recalls is Jona Jett.

What she really does the best is songwriting. A bunch of nice songs that she wrote are available on her mp3.com site. So, go ahead feel free to download them. She writes intriguing lyrics and rock music with a few twist here and there. In lots of her songs she deliberately inverses rock cliche where guy sings and girl harminizes. In most of her songs, she sings and a guy harmonizes. Harmonies are beautifully mached. Just hear Cigarettes, Love & Kisses, Talking To Myself and Terminal Flirt.

Her songwriting style is much of the Liz Phair's, just a little more traditional and less guitar based. Song that jups out from the rest is certainly Hey Yeah OK, the only one in post-modern rock production by Sean Ewing. This song represents the direction in which I think Damian should move. With this song in her portfolio, Damian Child is ready to write a new page in rock'n'roll history.
