emotional:
Jamie Lawson

I can easily say that this guy is the whole reason for me doing this. His song "Fussy" is the most beautiful pop song recently written. All pop cliches are present in this song, yet song is very exciting and makes you want to rewind it to the infinity. What Lawson caught here is worthy of the beauty of the "Brown Eyed Girl" by you know who. Also, the song reminds me (remotely) on "American Pie". Anyway, this is the type of songs that my sister tries to write. Other song "The Hunger Song" is slower, but holds the same emotion. I am waiting with impatience to hear some more from Jamie. His voice is angelic and is really hard to compare him with anyone. You can definitely hear Nick Drake in it, but there's not nothing dark about it. Richard Buckner also comes in mind, it's this type of tenor tremolo plus falsetto, but then again, Jamie is a sort of his own. He quotes Jeff Buckley, 10 000 Maniacs and Mark Eitzel as his infuleces and all that makes sense. He is mostly a solo artist, performing only on his guitar, but sometimes he is backed up by a band called The Baptists (Simon G. Allen on electric bass and Julian Simon on drums). He is at the very beginning of his career, so please support things he's doing. Go ahead and check him out. He is a regular at 12 Bar Club and at Karshmir Klub, interesting venues in London. He is from Plymouth, Davon.

Here are some of his songs that are available free on The Internet, and I will also quote Jamie's interesting spiel about his own songs.

Fussy
"A glorious 4 minute pop song in the vein of 10,000 maniacs and teenage fanclub. Happy sound/Shallow lyrics. I wanted to write something happy. I failed."... "Songwriting is a wierd thing. I can go month's without being able to write anything then write four songs in one week (this has just happened). I don't always know what my songs are about. I start writing a song about love and it comes out utterly disturbing (I hope these things are not connected). Fussy came in stages, as I've said before, an attempt to write something happy, althogh it sounds happy it's very shallow, but I guess it works."

The Hunger Song
"An acoustic song in the lovely 'E' tuning. A nursery rhyme of hurt and food loss."... "The hunger song was written about a girl I knew who lived and still lives too far away for anything to happen. That was written very quickly. At first I was quite embarrassed by it because it's so simple but I like that it has no chorus and it's still catchy. It's also in a funny tuning which I like to play around with a lot."

Jamie Lawson Live
These are his several live performance at 12 Bar Club in England (January 4, 2000; November 30, 1999 and October 17, 1999.). Sound is very lo-fi and it is not the best presentation of Jamie's wonderful talent, but for those who can't travel to London that easy, this sevrves as a nice suplement before Jamie puts out a cd. Here's what Jamie says: "I don't remember which gigs are on the 12 Bar Club site as I've never been able to access the site myself. I think there are two or three gigs on the site and only one I was slightly happy with, 30.11.99. I can't tell you much about the performance, the crowd were really quiet but I couldn't tell if it was because they were into it or just polite. It was a good gig though and some people said hello which is always a good sign."
