Reflections

written March 17, 2001

My smile is forever on your face
My blood runs through your veins
The heart that beats within you
Reflects the rhythm of my own.

Your laughter sounds so familiar,
A recording of my own amusement
And when, Heaven forbid, tears fall from your eyes
I see a perfect reflection of sadness I have felt before.

So little did I think of my own beauty until I met you
And had desires to sneak looks at you in the middle of the night
But beautiful I must be, for genuine happiness leaps into your eyes when you reach out to
touch my face, an exact reflection of how I feel when I touch yours.

Pride straightens both our spines, from new achievements
To when we make mistakes no one else is meant to see.
Silliness goes without saying, giggle-fests that run into overtime
And I know I've already taught you well when you try to share your ducky with your reflection at bathtime,

How proud I am of you, how much I hope for you, how much you've improved early mornings,
How wonderful to know that all I love about you,
I now know I love about myself,
How wonderful it would be if everyone could come to embrace the true reflection of themselves.
