Sports day
The Weak/ The Strong/ and the Neither...
I.
Why can't that girl pick up her legs in the 200 metre dash
Her toes were just an inch or so above the ground when her leg kicked fully backwards
What happened to the P.E. lessons in Hong Kong these days?
II.
Why only three people in the Boys A grade 800 metre
And the nimble leg winner says
'It's been like that for years, that's why I joined & got my gold!'
III.
What a sight
When all B grade girls are gone from the 800 metre track event
A girl in red is still running towards the finishing line from the 100 metre starting.
IV. a
Why laugh?
You thin-legged girl guide runner who comes last
when everybody is trying their best to catch up with the rest
You are smiling to yourself
embarrassingly
swinging your arms slowly
not caring how far behind you already are from the others
What right
have you got
to laugh?
IV.b
O Record Keeper of the 1500M
why One and a half lap behind and still hopping, leaping
keeping your buddy company talking
Have you no shame at all
where's your sporting spirit gone
We don't come to see you crawl
If you are not running
withdraw
V.
I admire the fatty who runs
who knows he doesn't have a chance to win
and still drags
his flabby thighs
spare tyre
and trails along
when everybody is gone
1
The student you like may not be the student who comes first
or second, or third, or fourth
or even running at all
But you like her all the same
or maybe more
2
It's the strong that dwarf the weak
and make them object of ridicule
The groupie that outnumber the lonie
and expose them
and make them target of attack
3
It's touching to see
a girl of great talent
combing straw to make better pom pom balls
giving stickers to every on-looker
shouting slogans shaking sand filled bottles with the cheer team
when she is not the leader
and on the track there isn't one single runner
4
How that F.1 still dashes
when he's already got a red cone behind him
after a smart false start
How he looks for that chance to false start again and won!
5.
'That girl's super
could hardly catch up with her no matter how hard I ran'
remarked a F.5 school team runner
'Who's she?'
¡@
'F.1,a new comer.' her friend replied
Rubbing her legs with turpentine massaging her stiff shoulders
A.
Why bring a book to sports meet when a bigger book is in front
why can't you read
why always read second hand
somebody's experience somebody's words?
B
People who read dont think
People who think dont act
people who act dont read
people who read, think and act are few
athletes who run and play dont study
scholars who study seldom run or play
students who run, play and study are few
Be the few
C.
Some city folks like braving the sun
even when there is shade
He would not go under it thinking it nincompoo
Some city folks like hiding in a room
even when there is sun
they would not go out to it
thinking those who do crazy fools
