Immigration |
If you have information that you would like added to this page, please email it to: zadrozny@mail.nu Late 19th and early 20th century saw the explosion of emigration from Europe, Eastern Europe in particular, to the United States. Hamburg and Bremen became two of the largest gateways to the "American Dream". The passenger lines of the period, such as the Hambug-Amerika Line, had agents who were based in or traveled througout East Europe promoting passage to America. The immigrants left behind friends and family, sold all of their worldly belonging except for a suitcase and set off in search of the American Drean. The trip from Poland to the port city was usually by train. At the port, they had to pass medical quarantine before bording the ship for the new world. The first glace of America for many immigrants was the Statue of Liberity in New York Harbor. These immigrants passed throught Ellis Island. Not all immigrants entered through New York, other ports on the East Coast were Philadelphia, Baltimore and Boston. Some new immigrants were eventually naturalized and became American citizens. To learn more about the naturalization process and see original documents, visit the Naturalization page.
