| Termite Species of the World |
| Formosan Subterranean Termite (Coptotermes formosanus) |
| All of the termites eat wood.
Most termites thrive in the tropics. The queen gives birth to the larvae. They are all considered pests, yet they also aid the environment in decomposing dead trees. The Asian Subterranean Termite is very similar to the Formosan Subterranean Termite. They are all considered termites due to the distinctive body structure and their diet which consists mainly of wood or other materials that contain cellulose. Alate, or swarmer type termites, which exist in most species, have wings that allow them to spread. Kings, queens, and alates are able to reproduce. |

| Formosan Subterranean Termite (Coptotermes formosanus)
The most important economic insect pest in Hawaii because they eat living and dead trees. Break off their wings and search for a mate; once together they find a spot such as a hole in wood to reproduce. Originated in Formosa in Asia and has been transported to South Africa, Hawaii and the continental United States. Generally live underground. Create nests. Asian Subterranean Termite (Coptotermes gestroi) Considered minor pests, but their colonies are spreading everywhere. Search for a partner to mate; after finding the partner they look for a place to breed. Endemic to Southeast Asia. Smaller than the Formosan termites. Generally live underground. West Indian Drywood Termite (Cryptotermes brevis) Pests that cost the United States over $300 million in damage. Female and male look for each other and mate. Most populous in The United States, the tropics of Florida and Hawaii especially. Live entirely in the wood they eat. Larger than subterranean termites. |
