Lesson Plan- Modified from a lesson found on Marcopolo

Overview: In this project students are introduced to their city as a historical place.  They will use the internet and other media such as the digital camera and PowerPoint to document an important historical aspect of the city or the neighborhood in which they live.  Each student will be required to research and write a paper about their area and document it using the camera.  A PowerPoint will also be required so the information can be presented to the class in a well organized way.  The topic can cover any time period as long as it is relevant to United States history from the Revolutionary War to the Vietnam Conflict.

Connections to the Curriculum: Social Studies and Writing

Connections to National History Standards: Taken from KY Social Studies Standards

SS-H-5.1.1

Interpretations of history are subject to change as new information is uncovered.

SS-H-5.1.2

Primary sources allow individuals to experience history from the perspectives of people who lived it.

SS-H-5.1.3

Cause-and-effect relationships can be analyzed by looking at multiple causation (e.g., individual influences, ideas and beliefs, technology,

resources).

The study of history at this level includes U.S. History from Reconstruction to present day, and World History from 1500 to the present.

Time: This is a project so it should take about two weeks to complete with two days the following week for presentations.  It will be presented to the students at the beginning of the semester and expected presentations will be a week before the final. Must be done in groups of three.

Materials Required:

·        Computer with Internet access

·        Digital camera

·        PowerPoint

·        Microsoft Word

Objectives:

            Students will:

·        Identify a period in history and a place to document and research

·        Be able to relate their topic to a time period discussed in class and be able to discuss the significance of their area to that time period.

·        Document historic places in their area and describe their significance.

·        Present their findings in both a PowerPoint presentation and a MLA style research paper.

Social Studies Skills:

Designing a research project

Documenting a historical area

Opening: Students will look at examples of local history and know the significance of why they are important to US History.  The class will cover all the time periods and students will choose their project based on the material covered in class.

After students are introduced to local history discussion should be started about what they know about the history of the area in which they live.  Ask what they know and why they think it is important to the study of history.

Bring into the discussion the importance of documenting history and the significance of new technology in documenting history. Explain why the digital camera and PowerPoint is going to be used to document and present local history.  Ask why they think it is important to both history and the future generations to correctly document history.

Development: Have students sign up for a topic on a list compiled by you.  Then make sure all the time periods are covered thoroughly in class. The topics of the projects must be related to the to all the material that is covered in the class and should be a review of the material before the final.

            Main Points:

·        Relates to topics covered in class

·        Integrates technology into the curriculum

·        Identifies the main elements of the time periods and presents them in a logical way to the class.

·        Is relevant to both national and local history.

Closing: Ask students to present their projects through a PowerPoint presentation and turn in the paper on the day that they present. Have a question and answer session after each presentation to assess the total knowledge and to review for the rest of the class. Do this about a week before the final because it will be a review.
