Chapter 9
They were an unlikely group, all different in temperament, all different in
looks – but it was these very differences that made them the friends they were.
Their differences in personalities complimented each other and their friendship
had been sealed from the day of their first meeting. Right now, those very
differences were emphasized more than ever as the 3 of them waited impatiently
for their escorts.
The King sat calmly, no sign of restlessness visible in his demeanour. The same
couldn’t be said of his son, whose edginess was slowly infecting the rest of the
room, where a seemingly relaxed Alex sat - his constantly moving hands the only
signs of his rapidly increasing nervousness, today was the first time he was
escorting the Princess in an official capacity. It was unsaid, but they both
knew the meaning of such an event.
Max stood staring out the window, his thoughts preoccupied by his beloved grasa
and his newly found cousin, to the dangers that lay ahead and the fragility of
the emotions that were bound to fly during this first meeting between the two.
The Ballina, unlike the others featured little in his thoughts, and fortunately
for him, he and Tess decided to go as friends. A part of him was fully aware
that the only reason she had agreed to go with him, at Isabel's suggestion was
only because Kyle was out of town on some mission for the Royal Guard. It didn’t
bother him – he wasn’t ready to deal with all that came with having a date, not
at the moment.
Ignoring the rest and pacing the length of the room, his wolflike movements
concealing a barely leashed energy was the prince. Despite his usual emotional
detachment, much to the amusement of his friends he was visibly uneasy about the
coming event. Like Alex he recognized the importance of taking a date to this
historic occasion. The fact that his date was undercover and merely his
bodyguard escaped his notice, and everyone else’s as well.
“What is taking them so long?” Michael demanded loudly, to no one in particular.
“You know your sister won't leave until everything is perfect,” the King replied
calmly.
“I don’t think Maria is the type to take ages to get dressed though,” Max
commented from his position by the window, and then swallowed a grin when he saw
Michael’s glare at his familiarity with his cousin’s personality. Jealousy was a
lot of fun to watch. “Isabel is probably forcing jewellery or something on her
now. You know she rarely wears any,” he added the last bit just to watch Michael
glower at him. Max exchanged an amused glance with a quiet Alex who was watching
knowingly. He turned when he heard a muffled chuckle from the King who was
trying hastily to turn it into a cough when Michael turned his glare to him.
“They’ll be here soon,” Alex added to take attention away from the others. His
words had the required effect and Michael noticeably calmed down, and resumed
pacing.
