FACING UP TO REALITY |
How often have you seen or heard others (or yourself) - Denying responsibility. - Saying things like, "It's not my job" or "I wasn't hired to do that". - Blaming other people when things go wrong. - Acting confused about what needs to be done and who should do it. - Playing cover-your-tail... concocting involved stories about why something wasn't their fault. - Living on hope. This involves failing to deal with tough realities and waiting and hoping they will get better on their own. There is a simple 4 step approach to get out of these situations of helplessness: 1. SEE IT. Recognise reality for what it is. Don't fool yourself, don't ignore things and don't play games. Accept things as they really are. 2. OWN IT. Once you see reality, you must own it. You may not have created it. Through ignorance, you may have added to the problem. No matter how circumstances came to be, you must accept ownership of them. You can't say, "This wasn't my fault," or "The problem was here before I got here." You must say , "I accept that this is where we are. This is what got us here. I added to some of this. Now, what are we going to do about it?" 3. SOLVE IT. Once you own your circumstances, once you take responsibility for your situation, you stop saying, "Why me?" Instead you say, "What can I do to solve this problem?" That puts you into the mode to solve the problem, to correct the situation, to overcome the obstacle. 4. DO IT. Actually get results you want in order to deal with the situation. Make it happen. But, you can't make it happen unless you first see it, own it and solve it. |
