This is a very interesting film indeed. So interesting in fact, that it gained an Oscar nomination for best short animated film in 1999. Don't think that just because it is a short film, that it doesn't point out relevant issues, this film really makes you think. It tells the story of an inventor, who by day works a bleak, meaningless job in a factory, but by night works on his dream invention. But when the invention is finally released to the world, the inventor inexplicably becomes what he most despised. It is really a very moving piece. In terms of animation, it uses a combination of stop-motion animation, and some CGI sequences. The end result is a dark look that perfectly sets the mood. In the sound department, the entire films soundtrack is the haunting "Elegia" by New Order. Once again, this song perfectly sets the mood for the film. In terms of sound effects, the characters don't actually talk, they just make noises that shows their emotion. Or perhaps they ARE talking, but we don't hear the words. And we don't need to, you'll know what I mean when you watch the movie. The other sound effects are well done also. So I highly recommend you watch this piece, it tells a story that really hits on some relevant issues, and I think one can several different interpretations on it. As for whats next from the director Mark Osborne, he is creating another film called "The Better Half." It should be interesting to see how that turns out, but I expect something very high quality, considering the quality of this movie. |
