First of all, to unzip files you need an Unzipping Program. The easiest and FREE program I use is Winzip. Download it at their website and after 30 days you still get to keep it for FREE!! So, you have a zipped file and you want it unzipped. Let's say it's a painting that you just downloaded here. A painting is an object and all objects go under C/Program Files/Maxis/The Sims/Downloads. (Or C/Program Files/Maxis/The Sims/Gamedata/Objects, it doesn't matter which one you use.) After your file is done downloading Winzip should come up automatically, and you should click "I agree".
Then the Winzip screen should come up and you'll see the painting file, let's say it was called "Rainbow". Click "Rainbow" only once so it turns blue, then click extract. Click the arrow that is to the left of folders/drives. Then you'll see a ton of folders and files. Click the C Drive if it's not already selected. Find Program Files, then Maxis, then The Sims, then Downloads. After you have done that simply click "Extract" and you have extracted your painting! whenever you play the Sims, you'll now see the painting in Buy Mode.
