A continuation of the Return

Commander Adama looked up from his desk as the door annunicator sounded. “Enter.”

He watched as his son Apollo and his wingman, Starbuck entered. “Why the long faces?”

Apollo looked at his feet. “Father, we have to report on the Imotet and there is a concern.”

Adam sat back I his chair and gazed at his son. “What is it?”

Apollo looked at his father and straightened up a bit. We inspected both Cobras and the Imotet. Since Starbuck did the fighters, I will let him explain.”

Adam leaned forward. “Well Starbuck?” he noticed that the Lieutenant looked antsy.

“Commander, the Cobras are fully functional but they are not completely compatible with the Vipers in fuel requirements and weapons. They can be used but only the Lords of Kobol could say for how long. We could lose the pilots real quick.”

Adama rubbed his chin. “I see. What about the Imotet, Apollo?’

“The same holds true. On the plus side, there is a lot of fuel and munitions if we secured them for Cobra use. While the Cobras could be used for several yahrens, the Imotet would have to be abandoned as it would last less than half a yahren.”

Adama looked at him with a furrow to his brow. “Did you say munitions? Are you suggesting that the Cobras do not use laser torpedoes like the Vipers?”

“No, Sir. They use bullets. Fortunately the Imotet’s guns and the Cobra guns use the same munitions.”

Adama stood up and paced before turning back to the Warriors. “Can we store the fuel for the Cobras on Galactica?”

Apollo and Starbuck exchanged glances. “Father there were eighteen fuel containers but only twelve were full. We could transfer the empties and then run refueling lines from the Imotet to the empties until all twelve were transferred.”

“Good, as I remember there are sixteen defensive batteries. We can mount four batteries on the two agro ship and have the Cobras fly cover for them in case of attack.”

Apollo nodded. “I will get right on it. Starbuck can select the pilots for the Cobras after the munitions are transferred but what are we going to do with the Imotet. I hate to let the Cylons get her.”

Adama smiled. “All in good time. You two get started on the transfers.” He chewed his lower lip. “Apollo, please ask Sheba and Boomer to come by when their shifts are over.” He pushed the com-tel. “Colonel Tigh, please come to my quarters when you shift is over.” He did not wait for a reply.

In a short time, the two Warriors and the Bridge Officer met in Adama’s quarters. Adama smiled at them. “Come in, come in and have a seat.’ He waited for them to comply. “I have need of you.” He spread some papers in front of them.

Sheba looked over the plans and then at Adama. “Sir, I don’t understand.”

“Sheba, we cannot take the Imotet with us nor do we want it just destroyed as that might give notice to a Cylon listening post as to where we are.”

Boomer Frowned. “If we don’t destroy her, the Cylons would capture her and track her back to us.”

“Exactly. That is why I want you and Sheba to arrange for as much solenite we can to be hidden on the Imotet, enough to destroy a baseship. Boomer, I want you to remove the star charts and travel log and plot a false trail. Lead it from Kobol to anywhere you want and back to Kobol. Make it a long period. I want the Imotet to be found and taken aboard a baseship.  When they access to computers, it will set off a timer that in ten centons will blow up the Imotet and the baseship. I want them to transmit the false information before they are destroyed.”

Sheba shook her head. “Couldn’t the false information lead the Cylons to innocent worlds?”

“That is why I want Boomer to create a series of maneuvers that will twist and turn back to Kobol, a maze if you will.”

Boomer grinned. “You have a devious mind, Commander. Now I know where Apollo gets it.”

Adama nodded. “Yahrens of dealing with the Council of Twelve has cultivated it.” He turned his head as the com-tel sounded and picked up the instrument. “Yes? I see. I will meet them in the Council Chambers.” He hung up and sighed. “It seem that the Council members want the Imotet for themselves, as their personal ship. Well, I think they will change their minds. Go ahead and complete your mission.”

In Council chambers, Sire Uri led the other ten members of the council in their demands. “Adama, we understand you have found a ship belonging to our ancestors. We, the council have decided that we will use that as our own ship.”

Adama stood up. “Now Sire Uri.”

“Don’t Sire Uri, me. I know you want the ship as another warship, but the Council needs a ship of its own.” He sat down.

Adama sat down. “I agree that the Council could use a ship of its own. I suppose you could have the Imotet.”

The Council members smiled.

“That way the Cylons could exterminate all of the council at once.”

Uri stood up as his nostrils flared. “What does that mean? Is that a threat?”

Adama smiled. “Not at all. The Imotet is the ship we found and originally was launched from Kobol several millennia ago. It is returning from earth. Unfortunately the entire crew succumbed to a mysterious disease. In addition to the contamination, the technology is not on a par to ours. It takes different fuel than what we use. There is enough fuel to supply the Cobra ships for many yahrens or power the Imotet for less than a half a yahren. It also does not have FTL capabilities. We can take the defensive batteries and install them on the agro ships for protection. The Cobras which predate Vipers and even Starhounds can defend the agro ships in case of attack.”

Sire Uri remained standing. “What about the Imotet? If you abandon her, the Cylons will capture her and decipher her travel logs.

“Sire Uri, you and I agree on that. That is why steps are being taken at this very moment to strip the logs and plant false logs. Then we will deliver it to the Cylons, with enough solenite to blow a baseship into the next millennium. Now do you still want to reside on the Imotet?”

“You have this all thought out, don’t you Adama?”

“Thank you Sire Uri, I take that as a compliment. Now, if you will excuse me, I have much to do.”

Starbuck and Apollo flew the Imotet to an area of space away from the convoy. They punched in the coordinates for Kobol, powered the ship down and made their way to the landing bay. With a last look, they eased their Vipers into space.

“Hey Apollo, wouldn’t you like to see the look on the Cylon’s faces when she blows?”

“I would rather see Baltar’s face, but with our luck he would be on a different ship. Let’s go home.”

“Roger that.” He punched his viper into maximum as he followed his wingman on the way to the fleet.

As the two Vipers headed back to the convoy, two unknown ships floated motionless in space. Two sets of eyes belonging to the pilots watched the Galactica ships as they headed for the convoy. The leader motioned to his wingman and the two shadowed the Vipers.

A Cylon patrol encountered the Imotet heading towards them. The Centurion reported it to the IL Commander that an unknown ship was drifting towards the two baseships. The IL Commander ordered that the mysterious ship be brought on board. The mechanical creature turned to the gold Cylon Centurion next to him.

“Have that ship brought on board and download the computer. If they have had contact with the Galactica we may be able to determine where they came from.” The IL Commander turned to a Communications Centurion. “Get me Baltar.”

“By Your Command.”

Baltar’s grim face appeared on the screen. “Report. Have you found the Galactica?”

“No Commander Baltar, but we have found an unusual human ship heading towards us, unmanned.”

A look of puzzlement came over Baltar’s face. “Coming towards us? Can you show me the ship?” He turned to Lucifer. “You see Lucifer there are some other intelligent IL series.”

Lucifer turned away. “Intelligent, Indeed. It is probably a trap to catch two Baseships.”

Baltar frowned. “You heard the report. It is not Galactica or any of its fleet and it was headed towards Kobol, not away. Put it on screen.”

A screen lit up and the Imotet was shown in the Baseship’s landing bay. “Download the computer immediately. That is an ancient’s ship and may tell us where Adama is going.”

“By your command.” The screen went black.

Baltar grinned. “I have you now Adama. I will find out where you are going and beat you there.”

The screen lit again and the IL Commander became visible. “Commander Baltar, we have downloaded the computer and are sending it to you.”

Baltar frowned. “If I was Adama and I found a ship that I could not use, I might pack it with solenite and let it be brought on board a Baseship to be exploded. Get me that Commander.”

The IL Commander appeared on screen. An explosion could be heard and the IL Commander was knocked down. He reappeared as Baltar fumed.

“What is happening?”

“Commander, the human ship has exploded and has knocked us into our sister ship. We will . . .”

Baltar watched as the screen showed flame then went black. He turned to Lucifer. “Get the other baseship on screen now.”

Lucifer turned to the Communications Cylon then back to Baltar. “Baltar, there is no response from either Baseship. I presume that they have both been destroyed. In addition our computers are shutting down. Apparently the information that was sent had an imbedded command that infected our computers. It will take quite a while to purge the computers.”

Baltar climbed down from the dais. “Let me know when it is back up.”

Lucifer turned away from Baltar. “Intelligent indeed.”

Baltar swung back. “What was that?”

“By your leave, Commander.” The crystal dome head of Lucifer seemed to smile.

Just out of sensor range of the Galactica, the two watching pilots saw the massive explosion in the distance and smiled. The leader motioned to his wingman as they banked and dove towards the human convoy.

On Galactica, Athena and Rigel saw the ships on their monitors at the same time. Athena turned to Omega. “Sir, I am picking up two ships off our starboard side.”

Omega walked over. “Cylons?”

“No Sir. They appear to be Vipers but all of ours are accounted for.”

“Pegasus?”

She shook her head. “I don’t know. There is no transponder signal.”

Colonel Tigh walked over. “What is it Omega?”

“It appears to be two Vipers but they aren’t ours. No transponder signal, so it is impossible to say where they came from.”

“Could they be Cylons?”

Athena turned to Tigh. “Sir, you have flown Vipers. Can you imagine a Cylon in a Viper, let alone fly one?”

Tigh smiled. “You have a point Athena. Omega, get the Commander up here. Athena what patrols are out?”

Blue Squadron has just returned. Red Squadron is in front. Silver was getting ready to launch.”

“Very good, go to Red Alert. Rigel, Launch Silver Squadron when ready.”

Rigel nodded. “Aye Sir.” She opened her comm mike. “Launch Control to Silver Squadron. Launch when ready.” She watched as Vipers careened down the launch tube and into space.

Adama walked onto the bridge with a frown on his face. “Colonel Tigh, what is it?”

“Commander, two vipers are approaching. They are not ours and they have no transponder signal. Silver Squadron has launched to intercept.”

“Very good, but tell them not to fire until we know who they are. I would hate to fire on friends.” He turned away then back. “What about the Imotet?”

He moved to the Situation board. “Captain Apollo and Lieutenant Starbuck delivered it here. Just before they just returned, we picked up two massive explosion approximately here.”

Adama considered the two positions. “The Cylons may have lost two Baseships. That should slow them down. Hopefully they transmitted Boomer’s surprise. What did he call it?”

“He called it a virus. It is supposed to shut down a Baseship computer.”

“Did these Vipers follow Apollo and Starbuck back to the fleet?”

“They may have shadowed them. Perhaps a deep scan would be advisable.”

“You are right Tigh. Do it.” He paused a moment. “Have Silver Squadron hold back. This could be a trap.”

Athena looked up from her console. “The two vipers just banked away and leaving the are scanner range at full throttle.”

Adama nodded. Very well. Colonel Tigh, how is the installation of the Imotet’s batteries coming? I think we might be needing them soon.”

“They are installed and have fired a test burst. Everything is normal.”

“And the Cobras?”

“Engineering is still modifying them. We have upgraded the scanners and communications interfaces but unable to modify weapons and fuel.”

Adama turned as he heard Rigel call out. “Commander, multiple ships in scanning range.”

“Cylons?”

“No Sir they are not in attack formation and they have turned on transponders. They are Colonial.”

“How many?”

“Twenty larger ships as well as twenty four vipers headed directly at us.” Rigel pressed her headset earpiece to her ear to block out any noise. “Commander, we are receiving an encrypted message.” She glanced at Adama. “It is a Command Code, Sir.”

Adama looked at Tigh. “Rigel I’ll take this in my conference room. Omega, you have the bridge. Colonel Tigh, please come with me. Athena, please locate Captain Apollo, Lieutenants Starbuck, Sheba and Boomer and have them come to the conference room.”

The four warriors made it to the conference room in record time and almost ran into the back of Colonel Tigh. Adama activated the view screen on the wall.

“This is Commander Adama of the Battlestar Galactica. To whom am I speaking?”

“Commander, This is Captain Manethô of the Tiger destroyer Isiris. With me is the Destroyer Thebes. You don’t know how glad we are to see you, Commander.”

Adama shook his head. “Where did you come from and how many ships do you have?”

Sheba gasped. “Commander, I know Captain Manethô. He was part of the fifth Fleet.”

Adama acknowledged her with a nod. “Captain, You were with the Fifth fleet which was destroyed.”

“You are correct Commander. I was with the Fifth, but was detached for a special mission along with the Thebes or we too would have been destroyed. Our mission was to patrol the far reaches of the system. When we became aware of the attack, we head back but were too late. The Thebes had a similar mission and we met up with them. Together we managed to pull together a small convoy of eighteen ships and over twenty thousand survivors. We also rescued many Viper pilots who had been stranded but had survived. The Cylons are looking for you and that gave us the opportunity to shadow them just out of scanner range. Cylons never look behind them.”

“We can use your squadrons and your ships. There are two many civilian ships to protect with one Battlestar. How many Vipers do you have?”

“Operational we have forty but one of the ships was a cargo carrier and we decided not to dump the cargo for passengers.”

Adama frowned. “How could you justify that? People are more important.”

“Commander, the ship carried over four hundred crated Vipers as well as fuel and parts for two hundred more.”

Adama’s mouth dropped open. “Four hundred?”

“Yes Sir. The problem is that we don’t have room for that many. Our standard complement is eight plus shuttles and Raptors.”

Adama nodded. “I understand. We can take some of them off of your hands and then there would be room for people.”

“My thoughts exactly, Commander. As the fighters are moved out, we could bring on techs and their families to build the others. We could make that ship a mini space dock for damaged ships.”

Adama smiled. “Captain, that is an excellent idea. How soon can you meet up with the fleet?”

“Commander, look out your window.”

Adama pulled back the shade and looked at two Tigers and their mini convoy. “Captain, when you have integrated into the fleet, please arrange for Yourself, your Executive Officer and the Thebes Captain and XO to join us on the Galactica.”

“Very good. We will see you shortly.”

Adama looked at Tigh. “Imagine twenty vipers on a ship configured for eight.”

“Commander, I remind you that we have more Vipers than our own complement.”

“Unfortunately, Tigh there was one time we had a lot more. I wonder how many pilots he has. With that many Vipers, we will need to train pilots right away.”

Commander Adama and Colonel Tigh awaited the newcomers in the landing bay. Adama noticed that Apollo, Sheba and Starbuck were already in the bay standing by their Vipers. As soon as the shuttle doors opened Adama watched as four bridge officers and two warriors stepped off. A tall man approximately thirty yahrens old moved forward and saluted.

“Commander, I am Captain Manethô. This is my Executive Officer Isis.” He smiled as he introduced the blonde woman. He nodded to a Red haired woman. This is Captain Bethal Miw-Sher, Captain of the Thebes and her Executive Officer Elena Kiya.”  He walked over and put his hands on the shoulders of the warriors. “Commander, may I introduce my two warriors who found the fleet? This is Lieutenant Senbi Hator and his wingman Flight sergeant Xris Swordbreaker.”

Adam shook hands with the visitors. “Captain, This is my Executive Officer Colonel Tigh and our warriors, Captain Apollo, Lieutenant Sheba and Lieutenant Starbuck.”

Sheba grinned. “Captain Manethô, I met you once on the Pegasus.”

Manethô nodded. “Right. You are Commander Cain’s daughter as I remember.”

“Yes Sir.” She turned to Xris and instead of shaking hands, hugged him and kissed him on the cheek. She turned to the others. “Xris and I are cousins on my mother side.”

Xris grinned. “Glad at least one member of my family survived. I was afraid I was the last. Ah, Lieutenant Starbuck. I think we have some business to conclude.”

Senbi laughed as he looked at the confused expressions on Adama’s face. “Starbuck and I went through the Academy together. Xris was a year behind us. He and Starbuck had a bet as to who was the better pilot.”

Apollo moved forward. “As his Squadron Leader and wingman, I can tell you I have never flown with a better pilot. He has saved my rear end many times.”

Senbi frowned. “I can understand defending his reputation, Captain. Xris has saved mine more times than I can count. Unfortunately we did not get away unbloodied when the Cylons attacked. We lost a lost of good friends that day.”

Adama nodded. “How is it that you and the Thebes got together? I though the Thebes was with the Third Fleet.”

“Well, as you know already, we each had a similar mission. When we heard of the attack be both started back. We were jumped by a Baseship, but we held them off. We lost one Tiger but the Baseship was destroyed. We jumped and as we came out of the jump to find the Cylons attacking the Thebes, so we surprised them. The Thebes was up against another Baseship and I don’t know how many fighters. Thebes was alone, as the other Tigers with her had been destroyed in two other attacks. With my three Tigers, we managed to destroy the Baseship and most of the fighters. Unfortunately, suicide attackers striking the bridge and landing bays simultaneously destroyed one of the Tigers. The other was so badly damaged that we had to remove her crew and destroy it. As we headed for the colonies we found nothing but Cylons. We could only reach the furthest out colony. Thankfully, a Tiger can land, which is how we managed to pick up so many civilians. We also found a supply bunker that the Cylons missed. In it was food and supplies for two Battlestars.”

“How did they miss it?”

“It was a privately held bunker, owned by a company that supplied the Third Fleet. Inside the bunker was a supply ship full of Vipers. We loaded the supplies on the Isiris and Thebes and took off. On the way out of the system, we acquired the civilian ships. They all claimed to be looking for the Galactica.”

”It is very fortunate for you Captain. I want to start shuttling over the crated Vipers to Galactica. With the new Vipers and those pilots we can add more protection.”

Manethô nodded. “At once Commander.”

Apollo stepped forward. “With your permission, Sir, I request that Hator and Swordbreaker stay on board awhile as we have some questions we would like to ask about the make up of the Viper squadrons they have.”

Manethô nodded. “They have a rest period coming up so they might as well do it on the Galactica.” He grinned. “Just don’t plan on keeping them.”

As Apollo, Starbuck and Sheba escorted Senbi and Xris to the Pilot’s Lounge, Apollo sided up to Senbi. “What was the bet between Xris and Starbuck about?”

Senbi laughed. “The bet was who could get the first one hundred kills.”

“How many does Xris have?”

“One hundred and two. What’s Starbuck’s?”

“Close to two hundred but I think he stopped counting after Gomoray.”

“What happened there?”

“He helped take out a Baseship.”

Senbi’s eyes opened wide. “Wow. I think that trumps it. I presume his wingman was with him.”

Apollo nodded. “He was. Now what was the bet?”

Senbi grinned as Xris, Sheba and Starbuck stopped and looked at him.

“The winner was to get a date with some dark haired beauty named Athena. I think I heard she was on Galactica.”

“Starbuck!”

They all turned to see Athena in her dark blue bridge officer’s uniform, hands on hips and standing in the middle of the corridor.

Starbuck looked at Xris. “Feldercarb. Senbi just blabbed our bet to the wrong person.”

Xris looked puzzled. “Why? Is Apollo sealed to her or something?”

Sheba laughed. “No you dolt. Apollo is Athena’s brother.”

Xris looked at Senbi. “Frak. Is it too late to get back to our ship?”

Starbuck put a grin on his face. “Athena, did you care to meet our visitors?”

Athena smiled sweetly as she walked up to the two men, turned and took each of them by the arm. “Come on boys, since neither of you have any idea who won, we can make this a threesome. You don’t mind sharing, do you?”

Starbuck stopped. “Now wait Athena, that bet was made in flight school before we had actually met you.”

Athena frowned. “Who’s idea was it?”

Xris shook his head. “Another pilot, a junior to us, name of Zack.”

Xris looked at Athena, Apollo, Starbuck and Sheba.  They had all become silent and their faces showed sadness. “What?”

Starbuck looked at the pilot. “Zack was Athena’s and Apollo’s kid brother. He died during the attack on the colonies.”

“Feldercarb. Athena, Apollo, I am sorry, I didn’t know.”

Apollo put his hand on Xris’ shoulder. “Don’t worry about it Xris. I can see Zack doing something like that.”

Athena walked down the corridor and Sheba ran to catch up. “Athena, are you all right?”

She nodded. “Sorry. Actually I knew about the bet.”

“You knew?”

“Of course. Those daggits don’t realize that the corridors are perfect for eavesdropping. How do you think the instructors knew about most of the schemes of the cadets? Anyway, I was down the corridor and heard Zack set up the bet.”

“Is that why you started dating Starbuck?”

“Sagan no. The bet was in the academy. We didn’t start dating until after we had our wings and were posted to Galactica.”

“Athena, you are devious. Smart but devious. Did Apollo know?”

“That I am devious? He is my brother after all. Actually, he bet that neither of them would get a date with me. He lost.”

“Whom did he make the bet with?”

Athena grinned. “With me, of course.”

Adama paced the deck of his quarters when the door indicator sounded. “Enter.” He saw his son and his wingman walk in. “Ah good, you’re here. I want you two to go to the Isiris and the Thebes and check out the Viper Squadrons. Manethô is expecting you.”

Starbuck frowned. “Are we looking for anything specific?”

“The ships are carrying twenty Vipers each as well as their own Raptors and Shuttles. It has to be pretty cramped. I want to see if we can give them some room.”

“Father are you suggesting that we move them here?”

“No, not entirely, but there maybe some materials that could be repositioned. I don’t want to break up any squadrons but we also need to work with their pilots who do not have any ships to fly. With two hundred pilots and four hundred Vipers still in crates, we need to get everyone a ship. I have already ordered many of the crated Vipers to be brought here and replace our old battle damaged ones. We have enough room to start uncrating the ships and as more of them are taken out, more space can be found on the freighter. Just think what two hundred extra pilots would mean to our security.”

The warriors agreed. As the men walked to the launch bay, Starbuck looked over at Apollo. “Who many squadrons do you think we can make?”

“Well we already have Red, Blue and Silver on the Galactica. The Isiris has Dragonswing and Dragonclaw while the Thebes has Dragonsfire and Dragonslayer.”

Those aren’t standard squadron names.”

“No but they do add a little more flash than silver or red. They created the names after doing battle with the Cylon Base station. Senbi said it was a real dragon.”

Starbuck and Apollo touched down in the landing bay of the Isiris. As Starbuck climbed down he saw a colonial Warrior crossing the bay. She had long flowing black hair and by the way she carried herself, Apollo knew he was in love at least until he got back to Cassie. "Be right back Apollo." He ran to catch up with the young woman. "Hi, I knew around here. Name's Starbuck, best Viper Pilot on Galactica."

"Lieutenant Starbuck. I have heard about you." She smiled at him. "I am Flight Sergeant Tina Vardo."

"Well Flight Sergeant Tina Vardo why don't we go someplace quiet?" He wrapped his arm around her shoulders.  The next thing he knew, he was on his back staring up at a laser pistol in his face and a boot on his chest. Behind the laser was a very angry woman with cold hard eyes. Without a comment, she holstered her pistol and walked away. Starbuck shook his head as he saw Apollo walk up. "Don't say it Apollo. Man I never saw that coming"

"Serves you right for trying to two-time Cassie."

"I remember what Athena did in the launch tube."

"I remember. I would think you would have learned by now. Come on we have to get up to the Bridge."

As they headed for the lift, Xris met them "Bout time you got here. This way."

After a short meeting with Captain Manethô, the Warriors were led back to the landing bay by Xris. Xris shook his head. "You know Captain, some of our pilots are very attached to their ships even though we share them."

"I understand how that can be Xris, but wouldn't you all like your own Viper?"

"Sure but I doubt that anyone wants to leave the Isiris or the Thebes."

Apollo nodded. "I can understand. I think of the Galactica as home. Nothing else will suffice.”

Starbuck walked to one of the Isiris' Vipers. It was a new model but with some minor battle damage. Under cockpit her read the name "Rapier". He rubbed his hands along the skin.

"Get your hand off of my ship you daggit meat."

Starbuck pulled back as if his hand was on fire and looked at the speaker. He recognized the face and put his arm out, shoulder high. "Now look Tina."

Once again he found himself on his back with a laser in his face and two angry women looking down at him.

"I see you have met Starbuck, Sis."

Starbuck shook his head and carefully got up. "Twins? Man you ladies don't give a guy a break do you?"

One of the twins looked at Starbuck then her sister. “What do you think Sis, a broken leg or arm?”

“He can’t fly with a broken arm and he can’t stop with a broken leg. I wonder what else we can break?”

Forty eighty centares later, Commander Adama met with Captain Manethô on board the Viper filled cargo ship. He gazed at the enormous bay filled with the crated Vipers and other supplies. He shook his head. “Captain, it is amazing that you were able to acquire so much equipment.”

Manethô smiled.” Well actually, Commander, the ship was already loaded when we found her. This was the last shipment that was to go to the fleets, but the Council cancelled the order because of the Peace Treaty. Fortunately one of our Rangers knew about the ship and led us to it.”

Adam frowned. “A Ranger knew about the ship and no one else did? How is that possible?”

“Sergeant Major Snowden’s family owned the shipping firm and he is the last of his family. He actually owns the ship.”

Adama smiled. “That will really upset the Council’s plans. They want to use this ship as a Council ship after it is emptied. I don’t suppose the good Sergeant has any plans for her?”

“Actually, Commander, he does. Ben has requested that we turn this ship over to the Colonial Rangers as their home and training base. You see, this is not your regular cargo ship. You see before you the landing bay that will accommodate many Vipers, shuttles and smaller craft. What you don’t see is the extensive repair facilities along with a hidden landing bay that can launch Vipers and receive them. Ben’s father had been a Colonial Warrior and a Viper pilot for many yahrens. He was injured in combat with a Cylon and lost his left arm when he crashed. He barely survived but when he recovered, he went into the family business and built this ship. It has four batteries of weapons to protect the ship from pirates. This ship always carried fleet supplies that he felt deserved protection.”

Adama nodded. “I can understand and appreciate the Sergeant’s request, but what do we need the Rangers for?”

“Maybe I can explain, Commander.”

Adama turned to see a Colonial Ranger walking across the bay. The man stood over six feet three inches tall. Some gray showed in his sideburns and moustache. “Sergeant Major?”

“Commander, when you have to land on a planet, who do you send?”

“Colonial Warriors, of course.”

“Of course? Commander, no disrespect, but no war is fought with just pilots. You need ground troops. My entire command was on stand down and all the enlisted personnel were on the ground when the Cylons attacked. Our command ship and all the officers were lost during the attack, leaving me as the top ranking Non-Com. I gathered the command and we fought our way to the Galaxy. The few Cylon ground troops we encountered were destroyed.”

“How is that possible?”

“Our ship was located in a secret area far away from any population. The Cylons didn’t send a large contingent to eradicate the scattered settlements, at least not then. Fortunately Captain Manethô arrived before then, which is why we were able to save so many people. Most of them are from the scattered settlements and we got out before the Cylons arrived.”

“I see, but what does that have to do with your request.”

“Commander, my people are battle hardened veterans. If you land on a planet, the Rangers can secure the area.”

Adama looked from Snowden to Manethô. “He does make a good argument. The issue of the ship maybe a problem. The Council is demanding this ship be turned over to them.”

Snowden stood up straight. “Commander, the Rising Star is a privately owned ship, is it not?”

“Well yes it is.”

“Why hasn’t the Council demanded that it be turned over to them?”

“Because it is privately owned. I see your point. The Council doesn’t realize that the Galaxy is privately owned and that the owner is not only in the fleet, but actually occupies the ship. I see no reason why your ship cannot remain a Ranger training ship. Now, would you mind showing me your ship?”

“I would be honored, Commander.”

Snowden walked toward the lift, with a slight limp.

“Sergeant, why didn’t you become a Warrior instead of a Ranger?”

Snowden smiled. “Two reasons. First, They don’t make Vipers in an extra large size. People my size don’t fit. Secondly, when I was a teenager, the Cylons attacked our outpost where we lived and I lost my left leg. The medicos were able to replace my leg but it left me with a slight limp. It was not an issue with the Colonial Rangers.”

A secton later, Commander Adama was in his quarters when the door annunciator went off. He looked up. “Enter.”

Colonel Tigh walked in. “Commander, the Council has arrived and are waiting for you.”

Adama stood up from his desk. “Very well. This will be interesting.”

As Adama and Tigh entered the meeting, Sigh Uri placed himself in front of Adama. “Commander, I..”

Adama held up his hand. “If this is a meeting of the Council, then we will conduct it as such. Please have a seat.” He watched as the Sire huffed but walked to his seat and sat down. “Now, the Council will come to order. What is the first order of business?”

Sire Uri stood up. “We understand that you have turned one of the cargo ships over to the Colonial Rangers. That is unacceptable. You knew we wanted it for a Council ship.”

“Sire Uri, I did no such thing.”

Uri stood up. “Do you deny that a Sergeant Major of the Colonial Rangers is in command of that ship or that the Rangers occupy it? Choose your words carefully Adama.”

Adama looked at the Council members. “As you know, many of the ships in the fleet are privately owned, such as the Rising Star and therefore not available to be confiscated by the Council.” He watched as they nodded. “The Galaxy is a privately owned cargo ship and also not available to be confiscated by the Council.”

Uri glared at him. “That is only true when the owners are present, Adama.”

“Very true, Sire Uri. The Galaxy is in the hands of the only surviving member of the owner’s family. That person is Sergeant Major Snowden. Since he is the owner, he requested that the Colonial Rangers, of which he is also the highest-ranking Sergeant of the unit, be allowed to use his ship as a training and repair facility. I agreed.”

Sergeant Major Snowden walked into his quarters after Adama and Manethô departed. He stripped off his fatigue shirt and tossed it on the bed.

“Did you tell him?”

Ben felt a pair of hands reach around him from the back and rub his chest. He turned around and embraced the petite Five foot two inch dark haired woman. “No, I felt that if he should know, it should come from Captain Manethô.”

“How do you think he will take it when he finds out?”

“Commander Adama is a fair man and I am sure that he realizes that in order for our species to survive, these things will happen.”

She leaned her head on his chest. “True, but this began before the Destruction.”

He placed his hand under her chin and lifted her head. He looked into her green eyes. “Dana, there are over seven hundred people on this ships. Five hundred are Rangers and half of them are women. Even Adama has women warriors so that shouldn’t be an issue.”

“But Ben, they don’t have children.”

He smiled. “Actually Captain Apollo married a woman with a child. You remember Serina, the newscaster? Well she became a warrior and was killed at Kobol. Besides, some the Rangers are also Viper pilots, although Adama doesn’t know that. There are six Vipers in the launch bay that Adama hasn’t seen and four more Vipers being put together.”

“You are keeping the squadrons here? When will you launch the Ranger Squadron?”

“The Galaxy is my ship and technically all the cargo belongs to me since the Fleet never paid for them. The cargo was abandoned and therefore belongs to me. I could turn this ship away from the fleet and Adama couldn’t do a thing about it. Nor forget that. I need to clean up. Care to join me in the turbowash?”

Dana smiled shyly. “I thought you would never ask.”

On orders from Commander Adama, Apollo and Starbuck landed on the Galaxy a secton later. As the two pilots dismounted from their warbirds, Apollo noticed four Rangers in combat gear. Apollo approached them. “I am Captain Apollo and this is Lieutenant Starbuck. We are here to inspect the maintenance facilities and get a look at all the cargo on this ship. Corporal, please lead the way.”

“I am sorry Sir, but you will need express permission from Sergeant Major Snowden before you are allowed access to any area outside of this cargo bay.”

“What is your name Corporal?”

“I am Corporal Agenos Stillwater. These Rangers are Yon Calydon, Bia Blackstrom and Minos Nakht.”

“Very nice Corporal, but I am sure you realize a Captain does not request permission for anything from a Sergeant Major or a Corporal. In case you weren’t aware, a Captain outranks both of those.”

“Yes Sir, I aware of that but a private owner of this vessel outranks a Captain.”

Apollo stared at the Corporal and drew his weapon. He heard a cough from Starbuck.

“Uh, Apollo, I think we are outclassed.”

“Starbuck, I will not take orders from enlisted personnel.”

“Fine, but how about thirty.”

“Thirty what?”

“Thirty Rangers with weapons pointed at us?”

“What?” Apollo turned to see thirty men and women in combat gear aiming at them. He lowered his weapon.

“Rangers stand down.” A booming voice reverberated in the bay. As one the Rangers lowered their weapons and went to Parade Rest.

Apollo watched the man approach and recognized the Sergeant Major insignia on the man’s collar. “Sergeant Major, I am Captain Apollo of the Galactica and I want all of these people on report. As your superior officer, I demand complete cooperation with my investigation.”

“Captain Apollo, I am Sergeant Major Ben Snowden and this is my aide, Sergeant Dana Garca. This ship is not under your jurisdiction, Captain as it is privately owned.”

Apollo nodded. “I understand now. Take me to the owner.” Apollo waited for Snowden to lead the way and was dismayed when the man did not move. “Sergeant Major, did you hear me?”

“Loud and clear Captain.”

“Then take me to the owner.”

“Captain, I am the owner.”

“Oh. Well then this complicates matters a bit. May I inspect your ship?”

“Captain, you will be escorted to the non-Ranger facilities as required. Certain areas our off limits to all personnel except those that live on this ship or have a need to know. Secondly my people are not on report as they were following orders.”

“Look Sergeant, this is a cargo ship, who lives on a cargo ship?”

“Over seven hundred men, women and children and because of that, certain areas are considered private. In addition as owner of this ship, there are private areas that are no ones business but mine.”

“Well, Sergeant Major, we will see that all of the Vipers are removed at once and be out of your way.”

“How much money do you have Captain?”

“Pardon me?”

“No one has paid for the cargo and as the owner, it is at my discretion as to where the cargo goes.”

“You are still in the military and subject to fleet authority.”

Ben smiled. “But this ship and its cargo are not. If I refuse to release the cargo, what are you going to fly?”

“That’s blackmail.”

“Not really, Captain. I am making a point. This ship is not under scrutiny by the Fleet or anyone else, unless I, Master of this vessel, say so. I have already sent as many Vipers that the Galactica can hold. The Isiris and the Thebes are full as well. Where are you going to put any more Vipers?”

Before Apollo could answer, the claxon sounded throughout the ship. Snowden ran to the com-tel on the wall. “Report.”

“Sir, Scans indicate a large contingent of Cylons.”

“Estimated strength?”

“Sixty or more.”

“Give me ship wide.”

“”You have it.”

“This is Snowden. Tally Ho boys and girls it’s time to go to war. All battery crews to their stations. Flight wings Bravo and Delta prepare. Charlie, Echo and Kilo stand by.”

Ben hung up the com-tel. “Captain, you obviously can’t get back to Galactica in your shuttle. How would you like to fly a newly built Viper?”

Apollo looked around. “Where?”

“Captain, you know this ship has a maintenance facility, what do you think we have been doing? Playing pyramid? Come on. Dana you’re with me.”

Starbuck looked at the woman. “What are you a secretary or servant?”

Dana grinned. “I am his wing man.” She stormed off leaving Starbuck and Apollo staring after her.

The Warriors caught up to Dana as they entered a hanger deck.  Thirty-six Vipers sat in rows of six and unusual contraptions. Snowden walked over to Starbuck and Apollo. “The Vipers are launched by catapult. As soon as the catapult is activated, hit your turbos and form up. Apollo, since you are a Squadron Commander, you take the lead. Starbuck on your right, Dana and I will be on your left.” He headed for his ship.

“Close your mouth Lieutenant or your will be breathing Vapors.” Dana Sauntered by him with a smug look on her face. She climbed into a Viper with the name of Razor.

The two Warriors jumped into two brand new Vipers and clamped down their helmets. Over their headsets came the announcement.

“Vipers, ready to launch. Buckle up kids.”

As the Vipers were flung into space, the pilots hit their turbo launch buttons and flame sprouted from the three engines. In a few centons, thirty-six Vipers formed up around the Galaxy.

Ben keyed his mic. “Bayonet to Stinger flight. Apollo is leading, form on him.”

Apollo looked over at Ben. “Bayonet?”

“I am Bayonet. Razor is my wingman. Where do the bandits usually hit?”

“They always concentrate on Galactica.”

“Good, then I suggest we come up behind them as they engage the Galactica fighters.”

“Sounds good. Let’s do it.”

“Bayonet to Cobras, Have fun boys and keep the farms safe.”

“Bayonet this is Farmboy. Will do big brother”

Starbuck keyed his mic. “Bayonet, who is Farmboy?”

“That is the squadron leader you boys put in the Cobras. We have been working with them to plan a little surprise for the Tin Cans.”

Galaxy was at the tail end of the fleet with the Agro ships in the middle and as they approached the Isiris, Ben keyed his Mic.

“Bayonet to Dragonsclaw.”

“Bayonet this is Hacker. Where are you?”

“Striker Squadron coming up on your six. Who is with you?”

“Swordbreaker, Rapier and Cutlass. We are squadron light. What is your plan?”

“Apollo is leading us.”

“Roger that. Apollo how do you want to play this?”

“Dragonsclaw, this is Apollo. Form up with us and we will hit the bandits from the rear.”

“Hacker here. Shadow formation understood. Rapier and Cutlass form on Bayonet and razor. Swordbreaker and I will form on Apollo and Starbuck.”

Starbuck keyed in. “Hacker this is Starbuck. Tell Swordbreaker that I am one of the good guys.”

Hacker laughed. “That’s why Rapier and Cutlass are with Bayonet and Razor. They painted a target on your tail.”

“Roger Hacker. When this is over, we will have to meet and get to know who is who.”

“Starbuck, this is Swordbreaker. You already know who we are.”

“This is Striker Leader, we have bandits ahead in formation. Friendlies moving in to intercept. Let’s do it.”

As they moved to intercept, Sheba keyed her mic. “Boomer, we have targets in sight so be careful. There are friendlies coming in from the rear.”

“Roger, Sheba, I see them.” He hit his firing button and a Cylon burst into flame.

As the human tore through the Cylons from two sides, Raiders exploded. He Galactica fighters went straight through the formation as Striker Squadron passed them going the other direction.

“Scorpion Leader to Sheba. Return to the Galaxy and refuel. It’s our turn now.”

“The Galaxay? How can you?”

“You will see. Follow Core Control’s instructions.”

“Roger that. Good hunting.”

As Striker Squadron came into the flight, Greenbean contacted Apollo and instructed him to refuel on Galactica.

The Cylon Squadron Gold Centurion contacted his Baseship. Baltar, sitting on his throne turned to the control panel. “How is the attack going?” Have you destroyed Galactica yet?”

“Negative, we have met stiff resistance. We have lost twenty-five ships out of sixty while the Colonials have lost only three.”

“How is that possible?”

“We were attacked from the front and rear. The initial ships have retreated and a new wave of ships is hitting us from all four sides.”

Baltar stood up. “How many ships have you engaged?”

“Twenty five or more in the first wave. Estimate sixty ships in the second wave.”

“Impossible. Galactica can’t carry that many fighters. Where are they coming from? Have you detected another Battlestar?”

“Negative. There are twenty more ships in the convoy than we have previously encountered. Two of them are Tiger Destroyers.”

Baltar sat down. “There has to be another explanation. Even two Tigers and the Galactica can’t have that many Vipers. I know they aren’t building them. Commander, break off the attack and go after their Agro ships. Those are unprotected and we can starve them out.”

“By your command.”

The Cylons banked and the remaining twenty Raiders headed towards the Agro ships. As the first wave of humans landed to refuel, the pilots jumped from their ships, ran to the turboflush and then back to their ships to launch back into action.

“Striker leader, this is Scorpion Leader. The Cylons have changed their attack and are going after Farmboy.”

“Roger. All Squadrons defend the Agro Ships.”

Since all of the Viper Squadrons were now in space, they raced to the Agro ships. Farmboy and his five Cobras waited patiently. When the Cylons were in range, the recently placed batteries opened up, spewing the unseen lead bullets into the Cylons. The Cylons were unable to correct and their ships became riddled. Several Cylons were sucked into the vacuum of space when their cockpits were breached while others exploded as the fuel ignited. Only three Cylons escaped the mass destruction but ran into the Cobras that were waiting. Though slower than the Vipers, the Cobras were just as deadly and the Raiders were quickly dispatched.

“Baltar.”

The human turned his throne towards the IL series. “Yes, Lucifer?”

“The Raiders have all been destroyed with apparently few Colonial casualties.”

Baltar shook his head. We destroyed the Colonies with little resistance but one lone Battlestar thwarts us at every turn. How?”

“You forget that the Colonies were unprepared and not defended. We took them by surprise. The Galactica is prepared and defended. One might suspect that the twenty new ships have brought more fighters.”

“You may be right, but from where? All the supply depots were destroyed.”

The flashing lights in Lucifer’s head seemed to speed up. “There was a report that a Destroyer had landed on one of the planets and a secret civilian depot was discovered. Unfortunately by the time our forces arrived, it had been emptied. A phalanx of soldiers had been eliminated by the human ground forces.”

“Lucifer that is impossible. The ground forces were destroyed.”

“Apparently not all.”

“Send out another squadron to keep up the attack.”

“We cannot.”

Baltar scowled. “Why not?”

“We have no more squadrons on board.”

“Are there any posts nearby?”

“No and we are out of range from the nearest listening post or Baseship. We will have to return.”

“Well, we know the direction Adama is heading. Return to contact range at maximum speed and order new squadrons.”

“By your command.”

Adama turned to Colonel Tigh. “You’re serious? We had only three casualties against all of those Cylons? That has got to be a record. Sadly we lose a lot more every time we encounter them.”

“That’s the report, Commander.”

“Unbelievable. Where did that squadron that Apollo was flying come from? I understood that he and Starbuck were marooned on the Galaxy.”

“You aren’t going to believe this, but they came from the Galaxy.”

“A cargo ship? I know they have repair facilities, but a facility to launch a squadron?”

“Actually two squadrons. Apparently Sergeant Major Snowden has kept a few matters to himself.”

Adama nodded. “Maybe we should have a talk with our Sergeant Major. Ask him to fly over.”

“He is already on board. His squadron landed on Galactica after the attack to refuel and some downtime. I believe they are resting at the moment.”

“Even better, have him report to my conference room with his squadron and ask Apollo to be there also.”

Adam watched as Apollo, Snowden, Dana, and Tina walked in. “Sergeant Major, I think you have some explaining to do.”

“What would you like to know, Commander?”

“Who gave you authorization to form two squadrons and fly them into combat?”

“I took it upon myself.”

“On what authority do you rely on that says a Sergeant Major can do such a thing?”

“Commander, the Vipers on the Galaxy belong to me, since they were not paid for and are not the property of the fleet. Rangers are trained to fight with every possible weapon available. The Vipers are a weapon. We are to protect the Colonies and we were doing just that.”

“Who trained you?”

“Self taught with a little help from the Isiris and Thebes.”

Apollo stepped forward. “Commander, if Sergeant Major Snowden had not had the two squadrons at his disposal, we would have lost more that three pilots and ships. His people are as good as any Viper pilots that I have flown with. It was his Shadow formation that we implemented.”

Adama shook his head. “You launched from a cargo ship?”

Ben grinned. “She is more than just a cargo ship. Galaxy was designed to be heavily fortified and armed. We catapult the Vipers from two hidden bays.”

Adama walked up to Snowden. “Ben you said you couldn’t fly. You lied to me.”

“No Sir, I said I could not become a warrior. My personal Viper is a modified one that can hold a person of my stature.”

“Well, Sergeant Major, I believe you are now a Colonial Warrior, congratulations.”

“Sir, why am I being demoted? I am a Ranger first and a pilot second.”

Adama laughed. “How many Ranger Pilots do you have?”

“Five hundred.”

Adama was startled. He looked at the three women. “Five hundred? How many are women?”

“Half.”

Adama rolled his eyes. “Lords of Kobol. Exactly how many people are aboard your ship?”

“Approximately seven hundred and fifty but we could hold a few more of the right people.”

Adama paced. So five hundred Rangers and two hundred and fifty civilians. What do you consider the right people?”

“You misunderstood me Commander. The two hundred and fifty are not civilians but rather children. The right people would be technicians, Ranger recruits and med-techs. We do not have a lifestation.”

“Two hundred and fifty children? Why aren’t they on the orphan ship?

Dana stepped up. “They are not orphans, Commander. Their parents are Rangers. Oh, there were a couple of orphans when their parents were killed in combat, but they were adopted by other Ranger families.”

Adama looked at the women then at Ben. When you said it was a Ranger ship, you were not exaggerating, were you?”

“No, Sir.”

“I would be willing to bet that the Rangers are all sealed.”

“Mostly. There are a few who are not sealed but are in long-term relationships. The Destruction interrupted us.”

“That includes you.”

Ben smiled. “Yes Sir, I am sealed.”

Adama looked Ben up and down. “What does your wife think of your wingman?”

“Why not ask her? Dana is my wife and wingman.”

Adama smiled and nodded. “Dana do you have children?”

Her face grew grim. Our children were visiting their grandparents in the city when the Cylons vaporized the city.”

“I am sorry for your loss. I know how it feels.”

“Don’t patronize me Commander. Your children are on the Galactica.”

Adama sat down. “My wife was on Caprica and my youngest son Zac was a Warrior. He was lost in the first attack. He sacrificed himself so that word would get back of the attack.”

Dana put her hand on his shoulder. “I am sorry Commander, I did not know.”

Adama stood up and hugged her. “We all lost family in friends during that time and since.” He looked at Ben. From now on all Rangers will also be Pilots. They will fall under your command. Would you be offended if I made offered you a field promotion to Captain?”

“Only if I am allowed to promote my people as I see fit and I only report to you.”

Adama grinned. “Done.” He clasped Ben’s right arm. “Congratulations, Captain.”

Apollo escorted the Rangers to the Pilot’s lounge. “Drinks are on me, Captain.”

Ben looked at Apollo. “Captain, when we are off duty, the lowest ranking Ranger calls me Ben. It has been a long time since any of us had a drink as we do not have a liquor establishment on the Galaxy.”

Dana leaned over to Ben. “Order for me, love, you know what I like. I am going to the Little Ranger’s Room.”

Apollo watched as Dana, Tina and Manda left. “Ben, have you ever wondered why women always use the facilities in a pack?”

“I gave up that question when I was ten yahrens old.”

A few centons later, Dana emerged just as Starbuck walked in and collided with her. He caught the woman in his arms. “Excuse me, I didn’t see you. I owe you a drink for almost running you over.”

“No thanks Starbuck, I have one waiting. You can release me now.”

“But I find it so comforting.” He yelped as his right hand was bent back and a knee connected with his solar plexus, just before he ended up on his back. Though tear filled eyes he stared into a laser pistol. He shook his head as he saw Tina and Manda standing behind Dana. “Why is it that when I try to get friendly with any of you, I end up on my back with a pistol in my face?” From his position, he watched as Dana walked up to Ben and gave him a passionate kiss. Starbuck leaned back and smacked his head on the floor. “Frak.” He saw the twins towering over him. “Aren’t any of you Ranger women unattached?”

Xris and Senbi walked in at that moment and each wrapped an arm around on of the women. Xris held out a hand to help Starbuck up. “Let me answer that buddy. All of the Rangers are sealed or in log term relationships. Dana must be slipping. Usually when she draws a pistol, someone ends up dead. You have gotten off lucky three times. I wouldn’t try for a fourth.”

Colonel Tigh took that time to walk in. “If I find anymore fighting, I will close this place and send the offending parties clean every turboflush in the fleet with his toothbrush.”

Ben looked at Tigh. “No fighting Colonel. Dana was showing Starbuck how a Ranger gets out of a jam.”

“It seems to me that this is the third time. How do you explain that?”

Ben grinned. “He is a slow learner, but I think he finally got it.”

“Good. Starbuck, I heard Cassiopeia was looking for you.”

Starbuck nodded. “Thank you Colonel.” He walked out quickly.

Tigh could not help but laughing. “I do hope Cassi ropes that boy in quickly.”

On the bridge, Omega turned to Adama. “We have reached the coordinates that the Being of light gave us.”

“Good. Inform the fleet of our new heading. Any sign of pursuit?”

“Long range patrol to the rear just reported in. We are clear.”

It took Baltar a sectare to be resupplied with half of his normal allotment of fighters and another secton went by before he found the remnants of the battle. He turned to Lucifer. “Full speed ahead. It will take us at least three sectons to catch up.”

“By your command.”

Unbeknowst to Baltar, ten magnetic mines and a magnetic transmitter were concealed in the wreckage. As the Baseship passed through, the mines attached to the hull near the launch bay. The transmitter broadcast its position and the mines armed. They were set to explode when a Raider was launched.
