Dani' el Chapter 11

A. Fulfilled Prophecy (11:1-35)

1. The Persian Empire (11:1-2)

Also I in the first year of Darius the Mede, even I, stood to confirm and to strengthen him." (Dan 11:1) Dan 11:1: c. 539 B.C. Dan 5:31; 9:1

And now will I show thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia." (Dan 11:2 see notes below)

The Grecian Empire and Kingdoms ( 11:3-20)

And a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will." (Dan 11:3 ) The "mighty king" is Alexander the Great who died c. 323 B.C. He is referred to also in 7:6; 8:5 - 8,21 - 22. Cp. Dan 8:21-26v. 16,36

And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those." (Dan 11:4 ) Following Alexander's death the empire was divided among four of his generals: Cassander, ruling Macedonia; Lysimachus, ruling Thrace and Asia Minor; Ptolemy I, ruling Egypt, whose successors, the Ptolemies, ruled from 323 - 30 B.C.; and Seleucus, ruling Syria and the remainder of the Near East, whose successors, known as the Seleucidae, ruled till c. 65 B.C Zech 2;6; cp Rev 7:1

And the king of the south shall be strong, and one of his princes; and he shall be strong above him, and have dominion; his dominion shall be a great dominion. (Dan 11:5 ) The "king of the South" here is Ptolemy I Soter, 323 - 285 B.C., and the strong one is Seleucus I Nicator, 312 - 281, the most powerful of all those ruling in the once-united empire of Alexander. Daniel's prophecy here passes over the second Seleucid king, Antiochus I Soter, 281 - 261 B.C., though it does speak of a union of these two royal lines through marriage. vv. 8 - 9

And in the end of years they shall join themselves together; for the king's daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement: but she shall not retain the power of the arm; neither shall he stand, nor his arm: but she shall be given up, and they that brought her, and he that begat her, and he that strengthened her in these times. (Dan 11:6) Cp. v. 13 This king "of the South" is Ptolemy II Philadelphus, 285 - 246 B.C. The daughter was Berenice.

But out of a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his estate, which shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and shall deal against them, and shall prevail: (Dan 11:7) The reference in vv. 7 - 9 is to Ptolemy III Euergetes, 246 - 222 B.C. In v. 11, the "king of the South" is Ptolemy IV Philopator, 222 - 203 B.C.

And shall also carry captives into Egypt their gods, with their princes, and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold; and he shall continue more years than the king of the north. (Dan 11:8)

So the king of the south shall come into his kingdom, and shall return into his own land. (Dan 11:9)

But his sons shall be stirred up, and shall assemble a multitude of great forces: and one shall certainly come, and overflow, and pass through: then shall he return, and be stirred up, even to his fortress. (Dan 11:10) The two rulers of Syria are Seleucus III Ceraunus (sometimes called Soter) 226 - 223 B.C. and Antiochus III the Great, 223 - 187 B.C., whose activities continue through v. 19.

And the king of the south shall be moved with choler, and shall come forth and fight with him, even with the king of the north: and he shall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand. (Dan 11:11) Prov 16:14 Dan 8:7 Ps 33:16; cp. Eccl 9:11

And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but he shall not be strengthened by it." (Dan 11:12) Or <tens of thousands>

For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches. (Dan 11:13)

And in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south: also the robbers of thy people shall exalt themselves to establish the vision; but they shall fall. (Dan 11:14 ) : This "king of the South" is Ptolemy V Epiphanes, 203 - 181 B.C., whose activities continue down through v. 24. Job 9:13

So the king of the north shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the most fenced cities: and the arms of the south shall not withstand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand. (Dan 11:15) The "king of the North" is Seleucus IV Philopator, 187 - 175 B.C. Ezek 4:2; 17:17

But he that cometh against him shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him: and he shall stand in the glorious land, which by his hand shall be consumed. (Dan 11:16)

He shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with him; thus shall he do: and he shall give him the daughter of women, corrupting her: but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him. (Dan 11:17) 2 Ki 12:17; Ezek 4:3,7

After this shall he turn his face unto the isles, and shall take many: but a prince for his own behalf shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon him. (Dan 11:18 KJV) Isa 66:19; Jer 2:10; 31:10; Zeph 2:11 Cp. Hos 12:14

Then he shall turn his face toward the fort of his own land: but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found." (Dan 11:19 ) Ps 27:2; Jer 46:6 Ps 37:36; Ezek 26:21

Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle. (Dan 11:20 )

Antiochus Ephiphanes (11:21-35)

Why study this passage?

- helps us to understand the Brit Hadashah better.

- Messiah Yeshua was born during the reign in Augustus Caesar (Luke 2:1) when the Roman Empire was at the height of its glory. But it was scarcely 60 years since Rome had taken control of the Middle East. For 250 years before that , Grecian Kingdoms had dominated the area. We call them Syria and Egypt, they were not Arab, or Egyptian, or even Turkish. For two and a half centuries these lands had Greek government, pervading the area with greek though and literature and culture. The language of Italy may have been Latin, but the language in much of the empire was Greek. That is why the New Covenant was written in Greek.

- the very details scripture strengthens our faith in the Tanakh as the inspired Word of G_D. Notice in this chapter the coming kings were not named. However the details of their successive generations and their back and forth wars are far beyond coincidence. No one but an All-knowing YHWH Elohim could lay out 373 years of human history before it ever happened.

- The fulfilment of the prophecies of verses 2-35 has been so precise, so well confirmed by science and history.

And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries. (Dan 11:21 KJV) : vv. 24,32 This northern king (vv. 21 - 35) is none other than Antiochus IV Epiphanes, 175 - 164 B.C., the great persecutor of the Jews and type of Anti-Messiah.

And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant. (Dan 11:22 ) Dan 9:26

And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people. (Dan 11:23 ) Cp. Gen 3:1

He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers' fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time. (Dan 11:24 KJV) : v. 21 Cp. Neh 9:25; Ezek 34:14

And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him. (Dan 11:25 KJV) Verses 25 - 28 record the first campaign of Antiochus Epiphanes against Egypt.

Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain. (Dan 11:26 )

And both these kings' hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed. (Dan 11:27 ) Cp. Jer 9:3 - 5 Dan 8:19; Hab 2:3

Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land. (Dan 11:28 )

At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter. (Dan 11:29 )

For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant. (Dan 11:30)

And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate. (Dan 11:31 ) : Verses 31 - 35 record the desolation of the Jerusalem Temple by Antiochus Epiphanes. Dan 8:11 - 13

And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. (Dan 11:32 ): e.g. <the Maccabees.> c. 168 and following

And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days. (Dan 11:33 )

Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries. (Dan 11:34 )

And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed. (Dan 11:35 )

B. Prophecy yet to be fulfilled (11-36-45)

And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done. (Dan 11:36 ) Transilition to the Distant future and a Blasphemous Tyrant (36-39)

Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, *nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. (Dan 11:37 ) : Cp. 7:25 1 Cor 8:5 - 6 Isa 14:13; 2 Th 2: 1- 8 " oppose" "exalt" "the man of sin" ; "the son of perdition" "the lawless one" *It is every Jewish women's desire to bear the Messiah, in this context he claim himself as the Messiah/ god (blasphemy)

"But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things." (Dan 11:38 KJV)

"Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain." (Dan 11:39 KJV)

A World Dictator (11:40-44)

And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over." (Dan 11:40 ) Dan 12:4,9 Rev 13:7-8

He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.(?check this out) (Dan 11:41)

He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.(Dan 11:42) Joel 3:19

But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps. (Dan 11:43)

But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many. (Dan 11:44 )

The Abomination of Desolation (11:45)

And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.(Dan 11:45 ), indicates the midpoint of the 70th week ( Daniel 9:27). It is not only the begining of the Great Tribulation but also the begining of the end for the Dictator. See Dan 11:2, note

Note

The spirit of prophecy here returns to that which more immediately concerned Daniel and his royal masters - the near future of the empire in which he was so great a personage. Four kings were yet to follow in Medo-Persia. Then will come Alexander the "mighty king" of Greece (v. 3). The division of Alexander's empire into four parts (v. 4), as already predicted (8:22), is foretold. The turbulent course of affairs in two parts of the disintegrated Alexandrian empire, Syria and Egypt, is then traced down to v. 20. Here Antiochus Epiphanes, the little horn of ch. 8, occupies the vision down to v. 36. His pollution of the sanctuary is again mentioned. See 8:9, note. From v. 36 the interpretation is of the willful king and his activities in the end-time. See Dan 11:36, note. The three kings of Persia are probably Cyrus II (550 - 530 B.C.) referred to in Ezra 1:1 and 2 Chr 36:22 - 23; Cambyses, 529 - 522 B.C., not referred to in the O.T.; and Darius I Hystaspes, 521 - 486 B.C. (Ezra 5; 6). The fourth king is either Xerxes I, 486 - 465 B.C. (Ezra 4:6) or Artaxerxes I, 465 - 424 B.C. (Ezra 7:11 - 26).

Dan 11:36 - Here the prophetic foreview, having traced (vv. 3 - 20) the two parts of Alexander's empire (Syria and Egypt) which had to do with Palestine and the Jews up till the time of Antiochus Epiphanes, and having described his career (vv. 21 - 35), overleaps the Church Age and centuries to "the time of the end" (v. 35). Prophecy at this point does not concern itself with history as such but only with history as it affects Israel and the Holy Land. Antiochus Epiphanes was insignificant as compared with many historical personages whom the Bible does not mention, but he scourged the people of God and defiled His holy altar by offering a sow upon it. His attitude and actions toward Israel brought him into prophetic light. The identity of the willful king is variously interpreted. Some expositors consider him to be the little horn of ch. 7 and the head of the revived Roman Empire. He will disregard all pagan gods ("gods of his fathers") and the Messianic hope, and will honor the god of war (the "god of fortresses"). He is identified as a supreme ruler, who will "magnify himself above every god. Another view considers him an unregenerate Jew in the Holy Land in league with the Roman beast (7:8ff.), who is an unbelieving Gentile in Rome (Rev 17:9ff.). The willful king disregards the God of Israel; cares nothing for the hope of Messiah ("the one desired by [Jewish] women"); and honors the Roman beast (the "god of fortresses"), Rev 13:11 - 18. The doom of the willful king is at the second coming of Messiah (v. 45). <The Beast:> vv. 36 - 45; Dan 12:11. (Dan 7:8; Rev 19:20) Cp. Rev 13:5 - 6 Cp. 1 Cor 8:5 - 6
