Artist Statement | ||||||||
In general, the subjects I engage are those that are most relevant to my life. As a young parent and artist, security, beauty, aging and death are themes that naturally reoccur within my work. Topics like personal relationships, family life, parenting and my own personal fears also appear and reappear. These topics are all issues that raise questions that I struggle with as an adult. I use sarcasm and humor to approach these subjects, but very sparingly. I take my work very seriously, but I try not to take myself too seriously. All of my work is, in one way or another, a self-portrait; at very least, autobiographical. It is important to me to work in an environmentally friendly way. My studio is powered by green enegy and I use mostly salvaged materials. This often makes finish work arduous, especially when working with steel. I enjoy working in a variety of media, especially steel and other metals. I also enjoy painting and printmaking; specifically, serigraphy. I like to use a variety of techniques and media within the same piece. Rigid processes and techniques are a very important part of the way I produce art, but it is important for me to allow myself to work spontaneously in areas to overcome the confines that can accompany these strictly controlled processes. These spontaneous additions and modifications are what breathe life into the work. Aaron Gist |
