THE WILD BOAR IN URUGUAY

European wild boar was introduced in Uruguay during the early decades of the last century, by Mr. Aarón de Anchorena, in today's Presidential Ranch, Parque Anchorena, in the province of Colonia, in the southwest of the country.

Once in the propitious environment provided by Uruguayan lands, it experiences a significant growth in number, together with a growing effect on cattle (predation on lambs), crops and wild fauna.     

On December 15, 1982, the wild boar was declared a "national plague", thus being authorized its hunting, transportation, trade and industrialization. This situation has not been complemented with a national plan for the control of the species. 

In this scenario, a research team is born, with the objective of gathering information about the biology of the wild boar in Uruguay, thus providing the tools for a better handling of the species.  

The profits from the commercialization of these products are invested in research projects for the species
