Biography - Zara Ahmed

So, for anyone who is interested in where I'm from, what I do, what inspires my songwriting, I'll try to be as frank as possible. (But still call me Zara, ok?)

I was born in London England, but moved to the Cayman Islands when I was - 6 weeks old, for my dad's work. I stayed there till I was 5 and then came to beautiful, vibrant Canada. I now spend most of my time between the Halton and Waterloo/Kitchener areas of Ontario, with a fair dabbling in Toronto when I get bored or when I'm visiting my sister or seeing a show. Like The Ladybird Sideshow at C'est What (Nia) !! Man, that place rocks, it really does. Anyways, excuse my rambling, I have quite the notorious rep for it.

I'm an Environmental Studies student, but at heart I'm also a politics, creative writing, film and theatre student. First and foremost, when it comes to making music I hold the writing above all else... my music is a vessel for my written thoughts. That said, I revel in jamming with the kids, rocking out in my little room and doing the coffeehouse/open mic' pub circuit. There is no better feeling than when you look into a crowded bar audience and make eye contact with that totally smashed dude in the back who is so completely plugged into your song right now...that rocks.

What else. I've done a lot of school and local theatre, I wrote and directed a short play for West End Studio Theatre's One Act Play Festival last may, and I am working on another script for this year's festival.

Another of my focal passions and something that I devote a lot of time to is trying to stay aware of and active in local and regional environmental and social justice issues. If you ever feel a gnawing need to discuss Urban Sprawl in the GTA, green development strategies, OMB reform, getting more citizens involved in the planning process etc. etc. I'm your girl! And here's a bit of a plug, if you live around Halton, check out the Halton Ecofestival this April 3!

Well anyway, that's enough about me for now. Sign my guestbook and tell me a little about yourself.
