Anatomically Correct (More or Less) Lamp

Completed July 2004
In May of 2003, I came up with the idea to make a floor lamp of my entire body, using plaster gauze to cast my form.  I decided to make it anatomically correct, but fully clothed.  I wanted to make it functional, so I came up with the idea to have 2 or more interchangeble lamp "heads", and to pose the arms in such a way so that they can serve as a coat rack and hat rack.  I wasn't able to get started on this idea until late June, when a friend, Rachel, was able to cast the front half of my left leg.  Do to busy summer plans for both myself and my few volunteer helpers, the project was put on hold until some time in July, when another friend, Kate, was able to cast the back halves of both my legs, and the front half of my right leg.  I then attached all the pieces accordingly, and then filled the feet with plaster of Paris, and used exapanding insulation foam to fill the rest of the insides of the legs.

And then the legs stood naked (sans genitalia) in my basement for several months, until one day in November, I tripped, and tore a hole in the knee of a good pair of pants.  So then my lamp had pants to wear.  Shortly there after, my father donated a pair of dry-rotting rubber over-boots, since I was having difficulty finding a pair of shoes that would fit the deformed feet of the lamp (one foot is just really large, the other is just really short and wide (oops)) and be really cheap.

On January 8, 2004, I returned to my high school where I had a group of volunteers cast my mid-waist area.  I used a different method of casting this time, due to the access to a moderately safe cutting tool, which allowed the cast to completely encase me, and then be cut off, as shown in the photos below.

A few days later, a different set of helpers cast the rest of my upper body.  ?(Photos by Rachel.)

This my lamp as it currently appears as of 6-3-4.  I secured a length of PVC pipe with plaster of Paris into the hands, and then attached the rest of the forearm.  I filled the empty space inside the arm with insulation foam, and then epoxied another lenth of PVC tubing to support the upper arm.  Before all this, I had cut the upper body into three sections, as seen below.

July 4, 2004-  The main body of the lamp is mostly complete now, and both lamp heads have been made.  All that is left is to mount the lamp base into the legs, wire the switches, and install the power box.  Then it's just a matter of finishing touches and dressing it.
