B.T.A.W. (Butt, Thighs, Abdominal, Waist)
The
ballet classes always starts at the “barre”, which
supports the balance of the body while it completes various routines designed
to increase strength, mobility and “turn out”(a rotation of the entire leg
outwards from the hip joint, giving the distinctive “classical line” associated
with ballet and enabling the body to balance more efficiently).
The discipline required develops a heightened sense of grace and fluidity. Based on a very correct alignment of the body, it can be intensely satisfying and enjoyable to pursue, gradually strengthening and altering the body shape after many years of work.
Modern Contemporary Dance
Basically a twentieth century
phenomenon. It is often associated
with freestyle, barefoot dancing, although it invariably masks a highly
developed technique.
Jazz! Jazz!
The kind of energetic dancing often associated with
musicals and television spectaculars, and groups such as “Cats”. Related to
jazz music it has its basis in improvisation on one hand and strict technique
on the other.
As
the requirement of technique and physique are not so exacting for jazz as for
classical dancing, it is accessible to almost anyone motivated to dance.
Tap Dancing is most generally associated with the films and
musicals of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. The
percussive sounds produced by metal plates on the soles of their shoes tapping
out intricate rhythms distinguish this particular dance form.
Anybody
at any age can have a go. It might fulfil your
fantasies, and in a very short space of time give you a real sense of
accomplishment. This is a very fun way of staying in shape.
A dance routines set to
funky music with choreography borrowed from club dance moves. Classes range
from simple moves with a little attitude thrown in, to what seems like a tryout
for an MTV funk-a-thorn.
Develops heart and lung
power and really improves your co-ordination and agility. You teach your body
to move in complex ways and use muscles that you did not know you had.
You do those fun dance
moves popularized in MTV or Jitter Bug, Swing, Rock n Roll, A-GO GO, Funk Rock,
etc, where everyone on the dance floor seems to move in perfect synchronicity.
Gets you fit and improved your dance co-ordination and
musically inclined. Walk like a dancer and move with agility.
