Rick Belz, Baltimore Sun, September 24, 2003 Mount Hebron had great expectations coming into yesterday's boys soccer game against a Centennial team that had won only once and scored only once while being shut out four times. In contrast, the No. 8-ranked Vikings had won five straight games while averaging nearly five goals a game. Goals in the 1-0 Vikings victory over the visiting Eagles proved much tougher to score, however. And that frustration level may have contributed to three yellow cards for Mount Hebron on the same play late in the second half. At the time, the Vikings (6-0 overall, 2-0 Howard County) clung to a 1-0 lead thanks to a perfect through ball by Josh Bostick and a perfect finish by Jordan Hoolachan. Hoolachan dribbled 25 yards completely unguarded by Centennial before curving his left-footed shot to the near post past sprawling Eagles goalkeeper Andy Wilhelm in the 17th minute. No one knew it would be the game's only goal and earn the Vikings' seniors some satisfaction after they had lost to Centennial the previous two years by an identical 1-0 score. "We've been improving every game, but this was a step backward for us," said Linsenmeyer, whose squad beat Long Reach, 5-0, on Monday. "We didn't play smart and they did. Their center midfield was disciplined and outplayed us." Linsenmeyer was unhappy that his midfielders kept working down the middle of the field instead of using the corners. He took some satisfaction from the victory despite his disappointment. "Last year if we played poorly, we lost. This year we played poorly and won," he said. "Hoolachan and our defense held us together." Aaron Heath was the Vikings' sweeper, Chris Franzcowski the stopper, Kevin Cooke the left fullback and Zach Barnett the right fullback. Goalkeeper Chris Nemeh made five saves.

Hebron . . . in OT River Hill . . . finally defeated Class 3A rival Mount Hebron in overtime, 1-0, on a golden goal by sophomore Malcolm Joseph IV. . . But yesterday's ending was controversial from No. 9 Mount Hebron's point of view. . . "He [Smith] fell on the ball, shielded it with his hand and then played it," said Mount Hebron goalkeeper Chris Nemeh. . . "It should have been a hand ball." Smith played with intensity throughout the game at three different positions, including striker, left halfback and right halfback. "We've been waiting for this game all season, as have they," said Smith. "They have a strong back four and I had to fight against them the whole game."
