Highlights of Summer ‘96

Since my family and I had just emigrated to
Canada in the summer, there had been a lot happening. There were places to explore, laws and rules to understand and
being inquisitive, we were thirsty to know more.
Settling in comfortably with my
grandmother and cousins was a very warm welcome for us in Canada. We knew we had some family to rely on and
help us in any way.
Furthermore, the highlight of my
summer was the five day camp I attended in Toronto. The camp was great apart from the rising time which was 6am as it
would be commencing at 9am. For those
five days I resembled an hallucinating person running around the house, keeping
my stuff ready for the following day, doing my homework and cutting out a
decoupage defined as a three dimensional picture. It was a picture of a girl and boy sitting on a bench. After it was done, we placed the decoupage in
a shadow-box which gave it a great finishing touch. We also had to do speeches.
Among fifteen girls, my topic was ‘pride’. It all went very well.
The informative camp also taught us some cooking, like making burgers
from scratch, pasta casserole, steak and mushroom salad and finally custom made
Baskin Robbins ice-cream cake. We were
all volunteers and were basically judged on participation. Very often we would have ‘brain teaser’
competitions and play in the gym. In addition, our teachers took us on a trip
to the Bluffs which was the highlight of the camp. Playing in the sand, getting wet, soaking others, all put us in
the summer mood. At the bluffs we had a
competition on who could make the best sand figurine. My group made an enormous lizard out of mud and for that we stood
in second position.
In conclusion, I had a great summer
due to the camp and I hope my teachers will organize another camp next summer.
