Ballet Terms
I thought I'd put some ballet terminology up so those people who are curious as to the
definitons for the French terms can try to grasp a better understanding of the theories of
motion behind the individual moves. Some of the translations are a bit sketchy, but often it is
hard to find a few short words to describe a very specific movement. The following is some
terminology from a Pre-Elementary ballet level along with my own attempt to describe how to
phonetically pronounce them.
- Plier (plee-yay) - to bend
- Relever (rel-ev-ay) - to rise
- Sauter (so-tay) - to jump
- Glisser (glee-say) - to glide
- Tourner (tour-nay) - to turn
- Élancer (ay-lawn-say) - to dart
- Étendre (ay-tawn-dreh) - to stretch
- Demi (demee) - half
- Tendu (ton-doo) - stretched
- Rond de Jambe (ron-de-jeuawmbe) - round of the leg
- Frapper (frap-ay) - to strike
- Adage (add-aw-jeu) - slow movement
- Retiré (ray-teer-ay) - withdrawn
- Developer (day-vel-oh-pay) - to develop
- A Terre (ah-tayre) - on the ground
- En L'air (ohn-lair) - in the air
- En de hors (ohn-de-hoar) - outwards
- En dedans (ohn-de-daw) - inwards
- Battement (bat-maw) - beaten movement
- Grande (grawnd) - large
- Petit (peh-tee) - small
- Échapper (ay-shap-pay) - to escape
- Port de Bras (pour-de-braw) - carriage of the arms
- En Arriére (ohn-air-ee-air) - in back/moving backward
- En Avant (ohn-ah-vaw) - in front/moving forward
- Croisé (kwa-say) - crossed
- Ouverte (oo-vayrt) - opened
- Fermée (fair-may) - closed
- En Face (ohn-fahse) - facing front
- Chasser (sha-say) - to chase
- Arabesque (air-a-beske) - a position in dance
- Assembler (ass-saum-blae) - to assemble
- Soutenu (soo-ten-oo) - sustained/delayed
- Dessous (deh-soo) - under
- Dessus (deh-suu) - over
- Glissade (glee-sawde) - gliding
- Pas de Chat (paw-de-sha) - step of a cat
- Poser (poh-zay) - to pose
- Changement (shaunge-maw) - changed/changing
- Couper (coo-pay) - to cut
- Reverance (rev-rawnce) - gracious bow
- Degager (day-gahjeu-ay) - to disengage
- Fondu (fawn-doo) - melted
- Temp Lié (Tawm-lee-ay) - linked time
- Soubresauts (soo-breh-soh) - sudden leap or bound
- Demi-detourné (demee-day-toor-nay) - half turned
- Pas de Bourree (paw-de-boor-ay) - stuffed step
- Jeter (jeu-et-ay) - to throw
- Temp Levé (tawm-lev-ay) - lifted time
- Balancé (bah-lohn-say) - balanced
- De Suite (de-sweet) - continously
- Passer (pass-ay) - to pass
- Sans Changer (saw-shawnge-ay) - without change
- Coup de Pied (coo-de-pee-ay) - neck of the foot
- En Croix (ohn-craww) - in the shaped of a cross
- Allegro (al-leg-grow) - fast
- Derriére (dere-ee-air) - behind/back
- Devant (dev-aww) - front
- En Bas (ohn-bah) - low
- En Avant (ohn-ave-aww) - in front
- En Haut (ohn-ho) - high
- De Côté (de-coh-tay) - at the side
- Battu (bat-oo) - beaten
- Piquer (pee-kay) - to prick
- Pirouete (peer-oh-ette) - to whirl
- Fouetter (foo-ette-ay) - to whip
- Demi-Contretemps (demee-con-tre-tawm) - half against time
- Tomber (tawm-bay) - to fall
- Sissones (see-sohn) - a step named for Count de Sissone, who invented it
- En Tournant (ohn-toorn-aww) - turning
- Chaînés (shen-ay) - chained
- Pas de Basque (paw-de-bawske) - step of the Basque region
- Soussu (soo-suu) - underover
- Entrechat (ohn-tra-sha) - braided
- Royale (roy-ahl) - royal
- Entrechat Quatre (ohn-trey-sha-kat-truh) - braided four times
