The Rumor Mill!
Gossip with everyone's favorite suburbanite, Binkie Muddlefoot!
So, what's the latest juicy news, Binkie?
Have you heard?
Darkwing Duck originated from a show idea called Double-O-Duck!
The picture above is from a promotional pin for Double-O-Duck. I have a lousy memory, and I don't remember where I got that picture...I think it was off of ebay. BUT, if I'm mistaken and this picture was originally made by you, e-mail and let me know so I can give you credit and such. ^_^
This gossip is fact! I was recently at Gathering 2001, a yearly Gargoyles convention, and Tad Stones was a guest in a Series Development Panel! Tad somehow got on the topic of Darkwing Duck, and how the show had started out as Double-O-Duck. Basically, he had pitched the idea of this spy-show, and then-executive Jeffery Katzenberg LOVED the name "Double-O-Duck." However, the whole spy film genre wasn't really popular in the early 90s, and the pitch was rejected as the show was just kind of a spy parody with no real heart. So they reworked the show with a more family angle. That was when the big boys at Bond wrote a letter to Disney saying that they could not use the "double-o" insignia. Just when the show had gotten a plot and a heart, it lost its tag name.
Oh, my stars! Well, goodness, how did Mr. Darkwing acquire his name?
I was just getting to that, Binkie. They had a contest in their department to come up with a name for Darkwing. Alan Burnett, who later went to work on Batman at the WB, came up with Darkwing--and Tad added the Duck. Darkwing Duck. A little bit of seriousness and a little bit of humor. Fitting, ne? And from there on out is history.
Wanna see pictures from that panel, and from Gathering 2001? Visit my photo album. Tad Stones is such a cool guy, and it was so neat to see him in person. :)
Have you heard?
That nice Mr. Darkwing fellow may appear in a movie!
Yes, we sure have hope. Several reports on the internet have been been floating around about the elusive "In Search of Mickey" feature film, to be released around Christmas 2003. This webmistress first became aware of this through the Darkwing Duck Page. After reading the report posted there, I decided to do some searching around on the web...
I found in a German online magazine thing, graciously translated by Google, the following information:

"into the search OF Mickey"?
Actually publish I only reluctantly rumors of Ain't it cool news, since they are mostly somewhat too much seized from air me. However rumors accumulate themselves up to a new half indication trick/half Live Action film into the last day, which is to bring so rather each celebrity from the Disneytrickfilmen back on the Leiwand: Kidnapped in "into the search OF Mickey" will Micky mouse and now must the most well-known mouse of the world be regained. Who may search here now, is so far unclear. Names such as Berne pool of broadcasting corporations and Bianca, Basil, chip and Chap, Darkwing duck and also Donald and Goofy fall again and again. The special is the fact that the Disneystars in its "natural" environment is to act (thus Tarzan in the jungle, Quasimodo in Notre lady, Aladdin and Dschinnie in the roads of Agrabah - where always also should be - the etc..)
I guess Google gave up the translation after a while. ^_~ But it piqued my interest--Ain't it Cool News? I then searched the Ain't it Cool website and found the following report.

IN SEARCH OF MICKEY seems to be headed from being a video film to a theater near you
Hey everyone, and you too Michael, it seems that we are in one of those... runs... you know what I mean.... One big story gets the entire company reading, thus making more studio types wanting to add to the story. And this time out, it's looking real interesting. First we got word about IN SEARCH OF MICKEY, then Sir Etch-A-Sketch and Moo Cow spilled some beans... Well, it seems that the good folks at Disney have been so happy with the development on IN SEARCH OF MICKEY, that the project has turned the corner from being merely a video feature, and following in the steps of TOY STORY 2, and will be the Christmas Animated film for Disney in 2003. And from the look of the cast of characters below... this seems like it could be interesting. I always dug Benard and Bianca.... I could do without Chip and Dale, Basil rules the Earth, I happen to be a big fan of Darkwing Duck... and.... DONALD and GOOFY!!! Of course... you have to wonder now.... What scurvy Disney S.O.B. would kidnap the mouse? Personally I don't want to know for certain... but it could be one of these: Peg Leg Pete, Horace Horsecollar or Bugs Bunny (my personal pick, but it'll never happen)! Here's the scoop from our Gungan friend...
It is NOT being described as a direct-to-video release. Like Toy Story 2 (which almost made it direct-to-video), The Search for Mickey will make more money as a feature, than as a video. It would be released most likey around Christmas 2003. NOT ALL of the characters from a Disney film will be in it. I cant be sure, but I think he said nobody would miss much less recognize Sword in the Stone or Black Cauldron characters. He DID say that the characters they want to feature the most (if you can stomach it) is Benard and Bianca from the Rescuers, Chip and Dale, Basil of Baker Street from The Great Mouse Detective, Darkwing Duck, and finally Goofy and Donald Duck. He said that the story would take you around the globe...the Streets of Agrabah, Sherwood Forest, Notre Dame in Paris, Hundred Acre Wood.....and on and on.....
When i find out more, you will know
Captain Tarpals
And in a post I found at this website, it was written:
http://stp.ling.uu.se/pipermail/dcml/2000-August/001550.html
I have heard through the grapevine that there is a film in the works called
THE SEARCH FOR MICKEY. Mickey is missing and a core group of his friends
(possibilities: Donald, Goofy, Minnie, Daisy, Pluto, Horace, Clarabelle,
DArkwing Duck, Basil of Baker Stret & Dr. Dawson, Jaques & Gus, Timothy the
mouse, Jiminy Crickett & Bianca & Bernard...I'm sure that list will be
shortened!) go on a trek to bring him back. They are going to be traveling
all over...Agrabah, 100 Acre Wood, Sherwood Forrest, London, Paris...and in
turn, interacting with all other Disney characters.
Binkie! You should be ashamed of yourself, nicking these reports off of others' sites! Well, if anyone has a problem with this, tell me and I can remove the actual reports. I just wanted to make available what actually has been posted on this film. Darkwing Duck in a movie..wouldn't that be the best? A chance to get some new merchandise, fans! This whole concept, if handled well, sounds like it could be an awesome movie. Especially hearing that the movie is centered around Basil, I wonder if the Basil statue in everyone's favorite living room could come into play...^_~ Probably not. Disney hates continuity. But who knows? Do you have anything to add to this report? Send it in!
Have you heard?
Gosalyn is really Drake's niece!
Though several Disney encyclopedias have cited Gosalyn as the niece of Drake, this has in no way been validated by the series or the creators. It is clear in the show that Drake adopted Gosalyn--Gosalyn is established as having no living family left, and they certainly don't know each other at first. There is no blood relation. This concept was probably an idea that was played around with at first, and somehow made its way into reports and encyclopedias that didn't do their homework on the show.
Have you heard?
Drake Mallard wears purple boxer shorts with little red hearts on them!
Yes...we already KNEW that, Binkie.
Have you heard?
A crimefighter by the name of Quiverwing Quack has a series in development to be released sometime in 2005?
A Darkwing Duck spinoff to be released in 2005 featuring the Quiverwing Quack? Well no, that's just a flat out rumor I made up. But it made you excited, didn't it? ^_~
Okay, stop yelling at me. If you have any more tipoffs, rumors, or interesting facts, send them my way and we'll see if we can get the word out. In fact, I beg you, send me rumors!
