China Photos - China in Miniature.... These are taken in Shenzhen (a very modern mainland city which borders Hong Kong, the first Special Economic Zone started in 1978-1979(?) which is officially capitalist), where there is a wonderful collection of scaled down models of various places in China, which are very realistic and apparently very accurate. That white thing I am holding is a large folding sun hat; sadly the string has since broken. |

A model of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet...I probably shouldn't get into political discussions here; but most readers will probably have strong opinions one way or the other. The Chinese government and the Dalai Lama both seem to have behaved badly over the years as far as I can see. [Decide for yourselves which sides are guilty of what...look at Thailand and Bhutan for other examples of repression in various forms...]

The real temples (centuries old) were built into the sides of some mountains, as shown; quite an impressive feat. [?? - are these the same temples (Wudan Mountain{?}) featured in the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? Quite confusing, as China has a large number of similar-looking big, old temples built on/in mountains: presumably this is deliberate, to be inaccessible...]

(Model of) the Reclining Buddha near Chengdu, Sichuan Province (condolences to all those involved in the recent terrible earthquakes in that region). Apparently, the real one is absolutely massive. [As my friend who's been to the real one and showed me the pictures can confirm]. Each of those small figures in the row in front of the big reclining Buddha is actually several times life size in reality. I think the real one is carved directly into a mountain - but I might be wrong...
