Cryptoichthyoid

We were the ones left to swim
the dark waters of His wrath.

The ark that Noah built held no place for us.

Two by two
all of you who sailed were tall above us.
We never saw your faces –
only the pads of paws, ebony hooves,
pink skin between the planks.

If you noticed us at all
in your clamor to board,
it was only as a silvery flash
in the black eddies
swirling
beneath
you.

It was there we remained –
a flicker at the edge of vision,
furtive movement beneath the waves,
shuffle and splash at your feet –

waiting to be saved.
