Brownies
Brownies are good-natured, nocturnal house Goblins or Brown Elves, which are invisible except through the innocent eyes of a child. Brownies have flat faces with tiny pinholes for nostrils, they are small and hairy and not very cute, but they are always happy and have smiles upon their small faces. Brownies have been known to play a trick or two on the housewife, such as hiding her broom or leaving something way up high on a shelf. Sources claim they get this trickster behavior from their bad roll model relatives the Kobolds, (see Kobolds on main Tiny Folk page).
It is said that Brownies live in country homes throughout Scotland. While hard-working folk slumber at night the Brownies come out and help do chores and small tasks around the house or barn. Brownies are hard little workers who are always happy to help and are proud of the work they do. Their hard work is very much appreciated by adults upon their waking but the Brownies still will not show themselves to adults, especially those adults who do not believe in them.
Brownies are well known as being protective creatures; they easily become attached to good, honest, hard-working people. Once with a certain family the Brownie will be with them for life, even if the family should up and move. If treated badly or offered some sort of payment for it’s night time labors, the Brownies will simply disappear, never to be seen again.
