Chapter 9
“Why Red, what brings you to Celadon?” Erika smiled pleasantly at him, though he noticed a large bandage on her forehead. She waved off his question with a laugh.
“I’m afraid I walked into a door. It happens too much, so it’s not really extraordinary. I’m glad you came to visit me though.”
Red grinned. “Hi, Erika. It’s nice to see you again too. I was just passing through. I’m helping Professor Oak complete the pokédex, since there are lots of pokémon I haven’t caught yet.”
“Sounds interesting.” Erika smiled.
Red beamed and nodded. “May I borrow your phone?”
“Oh, certainly.” Erika smiled. “Would you like to have tea together afterwards?”
“Yes please!”
Red dialed Indigo Plateau, smiling when Lorelei picked up. “Hi Lorelei! Is Lance there?”
The Ice Master shook her head. “Sorry, Red. His grandfather just died in Johto, so he’s gone off to make arrangements for the funeral.”
“Oh…” Red deflated. “I see. Do you know when he’ll be back?”
“He said it might take a few months.”
Red gasped. Lance would be gone for a few months? B-but…
He managed to thank Lorelei and hang up, before he stared at the phone, as though it would provide the answer to life’s mysteries. Lance was… leaving him? Was it because he had… with his pokémon?
He felt hot tears behind his eyelids, and he blinked rapidly, shaking his head. He could think about it later.
Erika smiled and served tea and cookies, and he enjoyed watching her go through the tea ceremony. It was very quiet and elegant and helped him not think about Lance if he concentrated on what she was doing. The cookies were very good too, little biscuits dipped in chocolate.
Afterwards, they just sat there and listened to the Pokemon Talk radio show, which was nice and relaxing.
“So where are you heading to next, Red?”
“I think I’ll be staying in Celadon for a few days. There are a lot of pokémon around here I need to catch, like the nocturnal ones.”
“That makes sense.” Erika nodded. “I wish you good luck.”
“Thanks Erika!”
At the
He’d keep Lapras with him, and Charizard to fly, and Jigglypuff and Raichu, since they were his main team. Oh! He had to bring a pokemon with Sweet Scent too, to attract wild pokémon…
He smiled and headed out to the wilds around Celadon. Two hours later, he was a Doduo and a Grimer richer.
He sighed, and wondered what Lance was doing now…
