I was inspired.. Many doodles came on Wagner day (some of which are not appropriate for this site). He was a character: the leading musical progressive of his time, visionary, egomaniac, antivivisectionist (!), womanizer (!!), and an all around scary sort of guy. ( I don't need to mention the anti-semitism, you all have heard about that by now, I'm sure). At any rate, Wagner is perfect for cartoons and such.

Rare moment of confusion on Wagner's part (I have no idea what prompted this one)

There is a real picture of Wagner that does not portray him in the best light. In fact, the light shines on his sideburns in such a way that it looks more like he is growing mold rather than sideburns. My friend originally pointed that out, so I tried to draw it. This drawing is not ambiguous enough, though - you can tell it's supposed to be sideburns.

The "hardly exceeds a dozen" comment refers to Wagner's affairs. It is from an article on 'Wagner and Women' in The Wagner Compendium (ed. Barry Millington, London: Schirmer Books, 1992.) [I'm a history major: I feel the need to reference.] This is a brilliant article because Millington, a Wagner scholar (and a sympathetic one, I should think), goes on to detail the "few" major affairs of Wagner's life, and then concludes the article by saying that there may have been at least a half dozen others and that more research should be done in the area! Isn't it great to be a scholar? Yes, indeedy.
