Reincarnation

While most people think it would be cool to have more than one life, I find it to be a sad thought that after I die I may never again remember the life I'm living now or the people in it. If we are to be reincarnated, then I am only temporary and my boyfriend is only temporary. Hence our love is only temporary and will be buried with our bodies as our souls live on and become new people and we forget that we were once to specific people that loved eachother. I will become a new person and he will become a new person. Will we be born again into the same lifetime? And if so, will our new bodies be drawn to eachother like they are in this life? Will we look into eachothers eyes and feel like there is something more about the other person besides just being another stranger. Or will we pass eachother in public one day, look into the others eyes, look away and move on never again knowing that at one time we felt a love that we thought would never end. Or will we be reborn hundreds of years apart into new bodies that will never remember the relationships we once had, but begin new ones and fall in love all over again not realizing we already once had a beautiful relationship that will never again exist. Or will time take a step back and we will be reborn into the same life, suspending existance in a vicious cycle. I am interested in knowing what you believe about the after life and why you believe it. So please email me with any beliefs and explenations you may have.

"As I was a Christian for many years and studied theology at college I know that Christian belief in the afterlife is not completely homogenous - there are differences in belief among various denominations and these views have also changed over the centuries. Certainly in the Judea of Jesus Christ many believed in reincarnation. Of course they were Jews and not Christians but it was not until quite late - beginning in 325 CE with the Council of Nicea - that belief in reincarnation was rejected as appropriate belief for a Christian. Today most Christians believe that when one dies one is subject to the judgement of God and that one ends up in heaven, paradise, hell, or purgatory. (This of couse depends on one's denomination. Most Protestants believe there is only heaven and hell while the Anglicans, Orthodox, Catholics and other churches of that type believe one may be given a second chance at heaven through purification in purgatory - this is certainly a more compassionate dogma than the 'as the tree falls so it lays'.)"

Each of us will spend a few short years on Earth, then be gone forever. Or will we? Is the feeling of déjà vu a clue that we have lived before? Many systems of belief incorporate ideas about reincarnation, a return to Earth to live again. For some, this simply means a generalized belief that something continues, some seed of existence, which extends beyond the life of the body. Others propose much more intricate explanations. Central elements do seem to be consistent however. The body is seen as a temporary dwelling, from which some spiritual essence escapes at death. (Though the Ancient Egyptians believed that the body must also be preserved for use in the next life.) The spirit or soul is then often described as undergoing some form of readjustment, reappraisal, perhaps including judgement. Aspects of the previous life, or lives will carry over into the next existence.

Some people believe that the spirit can be reborn into animal or even insect form, perhaps as a result of the person not having lived a good existence in their last life. Others believe that the soul can only be born into another person. In some religions, reincarnation is only a stage that the soul must undergo before attaining release from the endless circle of death and rebirth.

And what do we learn through this process? There is certainly some comfort in the belief that we don't have to settle for just one life, that we get another go at living well. Many people claim to be able to recall events from their last lives, and a thriving business has developed to assist people to "rediscover" previous existences.
