John Elway - The Legend | 8 Jan 2002
Under construction!!!
John Elway is 160-0 with the Broncos with 8 Super Bowls in 8 seasons on NFL2K1 for Dreamcast.  According to Holbrook, these are all neighborhood records.
Broncos: On course to Recovery or Great Disaster?
Westminster, CO - In a year that many predicted would be a year of dominance for the Denver Broncos has proved to be a bust.  Many factors played a part in the decline teams play.  Most fans will point to the fact that key injuries, particularly to Ed McCaffrey at the beginning of the season when he broke both bones in his lower left leg.  But should it have made such an incredible impact on the entire team's success?

Another theory questions the play of Brian Griese.  In a three game stretch this year, Griese failed to make a completion over 22 yards.  Looking back at game film, Griese has flashes of an amazing playmaker.  The last play of recent memory to prove that thought was in the Broncos last preseason game when Griese hit Rod Smith on the run into the endzone for what was about 35 yards.  It was a great as the pass could have been.  Fast, strong, and, most important, accurate.  It's been awhile since anyone has seen that same playmaking ability.

Teams seem to be figuring out Griese.  Watch a game and look at the secondary.  They play up.  Defenses aren't afraid of forcing Griese to make the plays.  This does several things.  When a defense isn't stretched out, the tackles become quicker and easier to make.  This also takes from the running game.  Griese is the most import cog in that offense, and he's not getting it done.

But let's forget that for a moment.  Griese has to be a leader.  People in Denver know that if Griese is on TV, he's whining about the team.  How the other players around him aren't that good.  The guy lacks every level of class that someone in his position should have.  Griese is the AFC's own Jeff George. Except George can throw the long ball.  When asked about Shannahan's possible move to Florida to coach college ball, Griese was his classic self with "whatever, it really doesn't matter to me."  Guys like Elway and Barry Sanders had more class in their finger nail clippings.
Finally, while we're on Griese, let's talk about injuries. Let's go back to 1999, Denver vs NY Jets.  Griese drops back and throws a dart to Victor Green, a Jets DB, who drops the ball.  The following play which looks like a tape glitch, Griese hits Green again, except he catches it this time.  Trying to make the tackle, Terrell Davis get his knee destroyed by a rolling Matt Lepsis.  Different game, Griese throws well over the head Shannon Sharpe and Sharpe goes up to make the play, and is tackled to the ground so hard, he breaks his collar bone.  Now let's go to 2000, Denver vs NYJ, Griese hangs a ball too far ahead of Ed McCaffrey who makes the play, but as mentioned before, breaks his leg.  He did hold onto the ball though (Ed is the epitomy of a football player).

Basically, we've learned this, Griese's talents are limited, he lacks leadership abilities and charisma, and he get's his players hurt.  Everyone suffers for him having been so inept.  The defense was 6th in the league.  Who knows how great they could have been if they hadn't had to be on the field so much?

So what's the solution?
- Expose Griese to the expansion draft.  Whether he's taken or not, it'll send a message.  Griese has a $6 million cap figure and Denver is $8 mil over.
- Reconstruct Terrell Davis's contract.  He'll do it and he's the only truly talent back on the squad.  Line or no, he makes plays for himself.
- Don't let Shannahan draft QBs.  Shannahan was successful with Montana, Young, and Elway-- all legendary talent.  Griese's been good once and was also injured that year (1999).  Shannahan has never had to groom a QB and if he'd payed attention, he might have waited for a Tom Brady (Michigan starter who sat with injury, paving way for Griese to play in the Rose Bowl).
- Keep Shannahan involved with the D.  They've really come on of late.
- Trade a back.  I don't really care which one, but get a pick or a decent third WR.
- Don't change a thing on special teams.  Elam and Rouen are both worth having.  If you don't believe me, ask Pittsburg about Kris Brown.
RETURN TO THE CODOG EXPERIENCE
The Best and Worst of Fantasy Football
Westminster, CO - Every year for the last five years, I have acted as a commish for several fantasy leagues.  Football, baseball, basketball, and hockey.  None are presented as well as they are on Yahoo! Fantasy Sports.

Ever try Sandbox?  Some collegues and I were interested in the keeper aspect, so we gave it a try.  I only have one word for Sandbox and it's whole system of play and interaction: Ghetto.  If you are like many players that just don't have the time to deal with java-less play, go somewhere else.  You may think/feel otherwise.  (
www.sandbox.com).  Strengths: Keeper league that remembers it's members.  Weaknesses: Is not fun, is not intuitive, is cluttered, lacks playoff option, players will complain of quality, commishs will catch a lot of grief, and so many, many more.

Yahoo is awsome.  Java apps, usable message boards, great free agent listings, rankings system for players, optional playoffs in variable formats, and so much stuff I can hardly handle it.  If you don't have a Yahoo! account, get one and start playing the fantasy games available.  You won't regret it. (
Yahoo! Fantasy Sports)

Another site that host fantasy sports is
cbs.sportsline.com.  CBS offers exactly the same fantasy football as NFL.com.  CBS/NFL fantasy leagues are much like Sandbox, without all the advertising.  If you are on a slow connection and can't make use of java script, this would be the type of league I would try because everything is in HTML.  Drafting, adding/dropping, and trades are a bit exhaustive, so if you're into a more interactive league, stick with Yahoo.  One bonus aspect of CBS fantasy sports is all the fantasy insight.  It is worthless to veterans, but beginners will find the advice useful, at least sometimes.

Denver, CO, Jan 8, 2002 - It is has been said that John Elway is among the most talented QBs to play the game.  Making five Super Bowl appearances, collecting one league MVP, one Super Bowl MVP, two championship rings and countless Pro Bowl appearances, many don't need to be cohersed into believing it.  But for the doubters, it may be time to turn on your video game system.  Cody Holbrook of Westminster claims there have been no greater than Elway on his Dreamcast.  "Oddly I had to get him off the internet and onto my Dreamcast.  But it was well worth it.  John is a pimp on here."  It's hard to argue.

"He accounted for 64 TDs this season," said Holbrook as he defeated the Titans in the AFC championship to face the Eagles.  Holbrook's friends agree, there are few that can play at that level.

Here are stats from the last 8 seasons on NFL2K1:
