In a time where the Ku Klux Klan was so rampant in Indiana that the state was commonly referred to as "Klandiana", seven schoolteachers decided to create an organization that would truly exemplify Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service.  An organization where African-American women could come together and support each other.  An organization where education was foremost and could be used to uplift the community.  On November 12, 1922, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was born on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Seven incredibly driven women are credited with this task:
Mary Lou Allison Gardener Little
Dorothy Hanley Whiteside
Vivian White Marbury
Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson
Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford
Bessie Mae Downey Rhodes Martin
Cubena McLure
