he year was 1922. Indiana had already given birth to a Fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi, but little did it know that SEVEN  ILLUSTRIOUS SCHOOL TEACHERS would give birth to a sorority.
SIGMA GAMMA RHO
Sigma  Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated was founded on November 12th, on the predominately white campus of Bulter University,in  Indianapolis, Indiana.
Sorors  Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorthy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Dulin Redford, Bessie Mae Downey Rhodes Martin, and Cubena Mc Clure created the beacon of light that shines ever so brightly in over 80,000 Sorors world wide. 
"GREATER SERVICE,
GREATER PROGRESS"
is the Sorority's slogan which proclaims the commitment of Sigma Gamma Rho to the community.
Sigma Gamma Rho was incorporated December 1929. The National Pan Hellenic Council is the governing body for Sigma Gamma Rho and the other eight  Black Greek Letter Organizations.
The ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho are represented by the french toy poodle, the yellow tea rose and that oh so fabulous royal blue and  gold. The ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho read the AURORA Magazine, which is the national publication for Sorors. Young teens who affiliated with Sigma Gamma Rho are known as Rhoers and adult auxillary members are known as Philos.
