Lalique Trophy 2002 Men - Free Program |
The skaters are listed from the one who finished last to the one who was first in the free program, not overall. Each skater's name is followed by his short program placement. The overall placement is at the end in the brackets. All the jumps are highlighted in pink and all the spins in green. Any other elements/comments are written in black. L is a lutz. R is a loop (rittberger). fL is a flutz; Fl is a lip; X+X is a jump combination; X...X is a jump sequence. When a skater planned a double axel (2A) it is stated, otherwise it's a doubled triple. |

11. Jong In Han /PRK/ SP:9 (11) Song of Homesickness 1A, 2L, camel/sit/layback/change camel and sit, 3Fl, 2R, sit/upright, SFLW, 3S...steps...3T, flying camel, 3L(pause)+2T, death drop, 3R (hop at the end) Very boring but quite consistent skater. No triple axel today though. 10. Silvio Smalun /GER/ SP:7 (9) Suite No. 4 in D-minor by Georg Friedrich Haendel 3A (three turn) +2T, 3T (fall out, quad planned); 3A (fall out); 3Fl (fall out); sit into Candeloro variation (he rotates on the whole inferior leg), 3L, 3S, sit/change sit, camel/upright var./change sit/change upright var./scratch var., FW in the form of an 8 (serpentine plus kind of SL), down on 3R with that unbelievable entry i mentioned at Bofrost, SLFW, death drop I must have missed a spin. Beautiful choreography again, a great skater indeed! Sad that he's exposed to nerves. Median: 4.75/5.0 9. Yamato Tamura /JPN/ SP:11 (10) Interview With A Vampire (soundtrack) 4T which was very low and he had a very deep kneebend on the landing + 2T, 4T again jump was low and just landed, 3A (heavy fall), camel/sit/change camel/sit, 2R, 3S, 3L+3T deep kneebend again, 3Fl, flying camel, SFLW, death drop, 2L He appeared to be very tired and slow. scratch butterfly into sit with much travel. I think this skater really lacks the package. He used to be more elegant before and his jumps are always small and just landed. His spins are slow, skating is slow as well… Nevertheless it might have been one of his best free programs ever, although I saw him land two quads in a FP in Gelsenkirchen before. 8. Ben Ferreira /CAN/ SP:10 (8) Oh' But on the Third Day / The Majesty of the Blues Album by Winton Mursalis 3F+3T (beautiful), down on 4T as usual, 2A, 3S, death drop into sit/flying sit into sit (I love it), 3A+3T, 3R, flying camel into camel/sit/upright, another combination spin: camel/sit/change camel/change sit/cross foot, 3L, CFW, ugly scratch butterfly into sit and scratch He had a beautiful middle-part with lots of spirals and figures. 7. Ilia Klimkin /RUS/ SP:7 (7) Sunny Boy by Rene Aubry klimkin spin (inside upright spin with free leg 90 degrees bent at the knee or wide open, it’s hard to explain, hard to do, as skaters told me, and just brilliant), 1A (surprise because he appeared to have fixed his 3A this season), 4T+3T (beautiful), superb camel position on the flying camel into camel and klimkin, down on a 4S with a two-footed take-off, clockwisecamel/camel into 3S (two-footed take off), spiral, 2L, camel/sit/upright var./change camel/upright var., saved 3F (rounded landing), 3L (two-footed), underrotated 3R with a hop, SFW, scratch butterfly into camel(I love it!)/ butterfly into sit/scratch What a mess again, typical Klimkin! Why can’t he just deliver??? Very weird music as usual. But he is so unique, has so many qualities. Median: 5.18/5.41 6. Vincent Restencourt /FRA/ SP:4 (6) Broken Arrow (soundtrack) by Hans Zimmer 3T (quad attempt), 3A+3T, 3L, two-footed butterfly into sit, 3F, 3R, flying camel, SLFW, 3A, 3S, some steps with a nice jump, camel/sit/upright/change sit/cross-foot, scratch Well, technically he is still at the top and for the first time his stiff arms didn’t bother me that much, nor the high free leg before the triple axel. He has somewhat improved in the presentation. This program is nice but I would still strongly advise him to get a good choreographer just not to lose marks on the second set. Median: 5.42/5.28 It's unbelievable to lose two ranks after skating such a program, not lucky at all. 5. Brian Joubert /FRA/ SP:1 (5) The Untouchables (soundtrack) by Nelson Riddle and Ennio Morricone down on 4T, 3A (three turn), 3.5T, 3R, sit/cross-foot var., 3A+2T, sit/change sit, SLFW, 3L, down on 3S, death drop, 3Fl, shaky camel/sit/change sit/scratch, butterfly two-footed (and no sit) After missing the first quad, I knew he would fall apart. I think the beginning of the program is good. His costume is nice. He fought. Sad to go from 1st to 5th but he said he’s made all the calculations and is sure to go to the finale. Let’s hope. /ZIGGY'S comment/ I don't think that he "fell apart". Joubert landed 5 triples, including 2 triple axels. Honda landed 4 triples and a quad and he had worse edges and questionable "Mummy" program. I believe that Brian should have beaten Takeshi. 4. Takeshi Honda /JAP/ SP:2 (3) The Mummy (soundtrack) by Jerry Goldsmith 3F (great), down on 4T, 3S, camel/flying camel, camel/sit, 3A (low kneebend) +2T (two-footed), 4T at 2 :52 exactly like Zhang's, 3R (fall out), camel/sit/upright/change camel/change sit/var., 3fL, death drop, travelling camel/butt into sit I didn’t like this free program at all. I really think that his presenattion downgraded this year. 3. Stanick Jeanette /FRA/ SP:5 (4) La Petit Prince by Maxime Rodriguez 3A+3T, 3L saved because he opened up the arms at 2 turns but clean, steps into 3F, flying camel into camel and sit variation (a la jeanette), sit/change sit and var., slow part where he is doing snake moves with the arms, 3A, 2R, SFW, travelling spin into sit, 3R, death drop into sit, 3S sooo lucky on that one, camel/flying camel sit/change sit/var./scratch I still dislike his skating due to his dislocated arm moves (so called French "Nouvelle Vague") but the judges seems to love it. I find it very unelegant but this free program is not so disturbing in that matter. It was a great skate from him. Median: 5.45/5.6 /ZIGGY'S comment/ Nouvelle Vague? Stef how can you make fun of my lovely Stanick in such an ironic and mean way?! Grrrr... :P 2. Min Zhang /CHN/ SP:3 (2) Overture by Michael Kamen - Seattle Symphony Orchestra Don Juan de Marco (soundtrack) by Michael Kamen Robin Hood (soundtrack) by Michael Kamen 3A+3T that saved the landing of the 3A but this combo was a real flyer!, 4S (hand down), SLFW, 3T, flying camel, sit spin, 4T at 2:52, 3L, 3R (hand down), 2T, butterfly into sit, 3Fl, sit/layback/change sit/scratch (sorry I must have missed a camel position perhaps) I’m afraid he’s also boring to watch ! But not unelegant. /ZIGGY'S comment/ Maybe I missed something but how on earth Zhang with 5 triples and a quad and his horrible basic skating quality/carriage/spins/presentation could place second above Jeanette/ Honda and Joubert???!! 1. Michael Weiss /USA/ SP:5 (1) Malaguena by E. Lecuona Concert de Aranjuez by J. Rodrigo Malaguena by E. Lecuona 4L (two-footed and underrotated), 4T+3T (clean!) although the free leg was so close to the ice but slow motion proved me right, 3A+3T, 3R, flying change foot sit spin beautiful, mike pike into 3Fl, 3S, 3L, death drop, SLFW, camel/sit/change camel/scratch Wow! I have never seen him deliver such a performance. It must be his best free program ever. Nobody was expecting this as his practices and warm-ups were bad. His triple axel was all over the place. Now he’s proved everybody wrong (all the people who have written him off) but personnaly I fear it was a one-night performance. I am not sure whether he can throw in another performance of that caliber. Anyways, congratulations, and I’ve never seen a skater pull up from 5th to 1st! /ZIGGY'S comment/ Maria Butyrskaya pulled up from 5th to win the European title in 1998 in Milan. :) And congratulations Mike indeed!
