Project History

The project was initiated in January 2001 because two sisters from Zimbabwe (Alexandra and Saunsuray Govere) were saddened that so many children in their village had become AIDS orphans. They were also concerned with the growing number of street children in Zimbabwe.  They believed that they were very blessed because their parents did not have AIDS. The sisters thought they should use that blessing to help children who lost their parents to AIDS.  Alexandra attended the UNECSO-Disney Millennium Dreamer Ambassador awards ceremony.  At the ceremony Alexandra met youths from around the world that had been working at improving their communities.  Some of these youths joined Kijana Project.  Others that heard about the project, but were not Millennium Dreamers Ambassadors also joined the project.  The project has now received the support of the Stanford-Harvard Quest Scholars program and Youth Venture. Other organizations and individuals have also become project friends and supporters (please see our friends and sponsors page).  We hope you would like to become a friend or supporter of the project too.
