More Book Recommendations! From Jane Z: Something about my favourite book JANE EYRE: Jane Eyre is a novel written by a British author CHAROTTE BRONTE. It is a love story of a governess and her master. Somebody said " it was the quality of writing ,the clear, forceful unallificial writing." Maybe it is a little bit difficult. But it is really romantic. The herione is charming of her self-respect,confidence and making unremitting efforts to improved herself. Her famous sentences are "Do you think ,because I am poor, boscure, plain, and littel,I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!---I have as much soul as you,---and full as much heart!" love her so much that I use her name as my English name now. (That's quite a recommendation!) ***************************************************************************** Several from Pedro Y: I recommend two books I have read recently. "The Nanny Diaries" makes me laugh, and "Suzanne's Diary for Nicolas" makes me cry. Nanny and Suzanne takes their reader to the polar opposite of the emotional spectrum, but both of them provide a shared, essential quality: the stories that are equally touching and entertaining. Publishing Facts: Title: The Nanny Diaries" Publisher: St. Martin's Press Authors: Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus Title: Suzanne's Diary for Nicolas Publisher: Little Brown & Company Author: James Patterson Why do I recommend them to our class? 1. Based on my understanding, learning a language is a part of understanding the culture. To extend the concept, can I also deduce that learning how people communicate today is equally essential? After all, we are spending more time talking and writing to live human beings we interact with daily than to our ancient ancestors in the country where we were born. I think "The Nanny Diaries" reflects the tableau of the certain segments, the wealth client and the working class nannies, of the society in a modern city. I will be least surprised to find the similar situations in our Bar Area. For example, I have learned so many famous brand-name designers and products in this book. Otherwise, I would have little opportunity to learn them myself without spending a few weekends window-shopping in the plush shopping malls, or perhaps taking a part-time job at Saks Fifth Ave. 2. The second book is, in my opinion, a good example of mastering a skill on how to write an emotional page-tuner without using many big words. Is this because James Patterson is a summay beach-reading author? Disclaimer: These are just my opinions, which are flawed the most of the time. So please don't punish me if you or the class happen to disagree. English Grammar for Dummies Author: Geraldine Woods Publisher: John Wiley & Sons I recommend this English grammar book for one simple reason: that is, the author has done an excellent job to make readers stay interested. It is a huge accomplishment by itself. In comparison, I have a bunch of not so interesting, standard grammar books on my bookshelf -- I call them, simply, the rule books. These boring grammar books can be recommended to someone as an effective mechanism to combat his/her insomnia. To be sure, they all have more comprehensive and sophisticated contents. Sorry, I know that I have been off the tangent here. |
