As concerns grow over the dumping of dredged material in the sea near Redonda the Antiguan delegation has postponed its trip to Montserrat.
The delegation, led by fisheries minister Vere Bird was due to meet government ministers on Friday to discuss the dumping of the material, which is being dredged from the St. Johns Harbour.
The ministry of foreign affairs says the trip has to be postponed because it clashes with a meeting of government officials, an expert from the Trinidad-based Institute of Maritime Affairs and other stakeholders.
At this meeting a second report on the environmental impact of the disposal of dredged material at sea will be presented.
According to officials the meeting may now take place next Monday or Tuesday.
Redonda is only 11 miles northwest of Montserrat and the government and other stakeholders fear that the dredged material will harm the marine environment and affect the livelihood of fishermen here.
Several persons expressed these concerns on ZJB’s Morning Show today.
Anthony Malone was a permanent secretary in the ministry of agriculture.
He told ZJB News he was pleased that the government is taking a position to protect Montserrat most valuable resource.
