Critical essay
Most characters in books play a role between goodness and badness and always goodness gets the win in the story. We usually take for granted the routine custom. But sometimes we need to wonder about what the real justice is.
In former days, there were a lot of wrong ideas that has been modified as time goes by;the new wolrd where columbus regarded it as India was actually America and Ptolemaic theory, prevailed at that time, is proved now as a incorrect notion. In this way, People tend to think objects simply because of biased view. Therefore, the general view of characters in stories can be reinterpreted too.
What I would like to clarify is common misapprehension of the two characters' inappropriate reputation, one is Shylock in The merchant of venice and the other is the master of Tom in Uncle Tom's cabin. They are the most representative men who has been misunderstood generally.
To begin with, in the Shakespears' story Shylock is described not only as a calculating and unconscionable figure but also notorious man as a miser. And finally he lost the case by the famous jest:this bond doth give thee here no jot of blood. Many people may think Portia's idea is absolutely right and shylock is foolish because he got deceived by his own words. But the important thing is that the law should be clear to the entire audience. As we all thought that flesh contains blood before the trial, the judge should be on shylock's side. Actually, shylock has no fault. He just lent money to people needed and Antonio also agreed with that contract too. If this kind of event happens in these days, if the law brings undue pressure upon a person, they must be blamed because they repress a business transaction and strain the law.
Second, the master of Tom in the Stowe's novel is also characterized as a bad men. He was in difficulties and eventually sell Tom to a slave dealer even he promised Tom and his family to release them from the status of slavery. Because of his decision, loyal and guiltless Tom undergo all sort of hardship and close his days with lonely. In this point of view, Tom's owner is immoral and blamable justly. But in my opinion, the owner is innocent as shylock is. first of all, he was in debt so he had a duty to return it back. And his behavior that owner sell his slave to someone is probably natural thing then. If someone consider it unjustly just because of sentimental aspects, it means he denies the commercial trasnaction, the basis of society.
Shylock and the owner have features that can be interpreted in various ways. They are all known for bad character aginst the protagonist but, in fact, they have their own faith and just want to follow that. They are not particularly faulty. I think the reason we blame them is our faith is little bit different from theirs or they are not generous as we expected to the figure in the simulated strory even we do crueler things to real people than they do.
Justice, or definition of goodness is depend on one's point of view. As we all know through the history, it is not true that only one is right. we should not only respect kinds of numerous ideas but also think in unique ways to find out the real.
