Zoe Afrikan Kingdom is an ecotourist lodge situate in Oyarifa on the outskirts of Accra, the capital of Ghana, West Africa.
Zoe’s vision is to establish an ecotourist lodge and to maintain and preserve the natural setting as much as possible. Indeed the word Zoe means “nature of God”, and one of the reasons the establishment was given this name to remind future generations that they must preserve Zoe’s natural environment and not let it carelessly fall victim to modernization and pollution.
Zoe Afrikan Kingdom’s mission is as follows:
(1) To create an exciting, enjoyable, affordable and relaxing ecotourist lodge in Ghana, West Africa.
(2) To preserve the natural environment of the lodge through careful ecological planning and consideration, including using as many natural products for construction and other purposes as possible.
(3) To create and maintain a peaceful and clean natural environment that both visitors to and residents of Ghana can enjoy.
The Proprietor of Zoe Afrikan Kingdom, Joseph G. Ghansah, is a Ghanaian who has traveled and worked throughout the United States. During his travels, he realized the importance of spending time in and maintaining natural environments. As such, he purchased land in Oyarifa, Ghana with the specific purpose of creating an ecotourist lodge in an unique and peaceful environment where visitors can get away form the stresses of urban living.
Whereas Zoe Afrikan Kingdom welcomes peaceful people from anywhere in the world, we would especially like to encourage Africans in the Diaspora to visit Ghana and Zoe Afrikan Kingdom to experience more of their land of ancestry.
· FISH FARMING
One of Zoe’s main attractions is the river in the middle of the site. This waterbody is home to a variety of fish, including tilapia, as well as a family of ducks, one of whom recently laid a nest of over 10 eggs. The fish are being farmed so that they can provide a steady food source to visitors of Zoe.
· CROP FARMING
There are a number of crops being cultivated at Zoe Afrikan Kingdom, including plantain and cassava, and all crops are grown organically. Zoe will increase the variety of crops as well as dedicate more of the site to farming so that the majority of the food served at the establishment will be grown there.
· MONKEY VIEWING
There is an adult male patas monkey (erythrocebus patas) in captivity at Zoe Afrikan Kingdom; his name is “King”. King likes being fed, but visitors (as well as Zoe staff) are not advised to get to close to him as he can be violent at times. Zoe is currently working on finding a mate for King.
· BAMBOO HUT CONSTRUCTION
Zoe Afrikan Kingdom is currently constructing bamboo huts to be used as lodges for visitors. These structures will have different types of infrastructure, including multi-room huts. The huts will be constructed with as many natural materials as possible. All huts will be equipped with Internet access.
· SNAIL FARMING
Snails are a delicacy to many Ghanaians, and Zoe is farming snails to be sold to be public. The snails make an interesting attraction to many visitors.
· RABBIT AND GRASSCUTTER FARMING
The grasscutter (thryonomys, also known as the cane rat) is a small mammal that is common to some parts of Ghana, especially the Volta Region. Zoe is currently breeding these rodents, as many Ghanaians and others enjoy their meat.
· “REGGAE BY THE RIVER”
Reggae musicians frequently visit Zoe and treat visitors to music by the riverside. This is especially enjoyable in the night, when the air generates a cool breeze from the river’s waters and the river becomes illuminated by moonlight.
· ECOLOGICAL SURVEYING
The ecosystem of Zoe Afrikan Kingdom and the surrounding area is currently being studied and documented to allow Zoe to take full advantage of the environment in addition to minimizing the negative impacts of the establishment on the environment. Part of this study includes documenting every type of fish, bird, insect and plant in the area. People who are interested in seeing these animals and plants in their natural environs are encouraged to visit Zoe.
Zoe Afrikan Kingdom will engage in the following activities in the near future:
· ZOE RESTAURANT
Zoe Afrikan Kingdom will begin serving both Ghanaian and international dishes. These dishes will be prepared with as many natural ingredients as possible, especially those grown and reared at the Kingdom. The restaurant will not serve alcoholic beverages.
· POULTRY FARMING
Zoe is currently in the planning stages of erecting an extensive poultry farm whose products will be used by Zoe’s restaurant in addition to being sold to the public.
